Why are the Simpsons Yellow?

I've always wondered why the Simpsons skin color is yellow. It's just different, and unique to the show. I am just curious as to why Matt Groening colored them like that.

This is the answer from Matt Groening himself, as said in a BBC interview in 2007:

"They're yellow because when it was time to pick the colour for the cartoon I didn't want the conventional cartoon colours.

An animator came up with the Simpsons' yellow and as soon as she showed it to me I said: 'This is the answer!' because when you're flicking through channels with your remote control, and a flash of yellow goes by, you'll know you're watching The Simpsons."

yellow is the most distinctive color to the retina so when your flipping through channels and you see all the yellow people you know it's the simpsons. but watch gravity falls and also rick and morty

I think the reason is that they couldn't find the perfect skin color so they went for straight up yellow.
