Hon how would you feel if you were the size of a kitten, taken from a really scary place as a shelter, kept in a tiny, but kinda of secure cage, to be taken from that small cage to a huge place with a big scary cat you don't know?

That's a lot to deal with when you're a tiny kitten! Trust, cats know they are small. This is why the kitten hisses "now". She's afraid of that big unknown cat, in that huge new place, with a HUGE creature (you).

Play with your kitten in a "secure" safe place with your kitten without your 1 year old in there. Within a week start to bring them closer and closer together through treats and play. It is great your 11 year old is a nice kitty, but here is what you can almost expect.

Kittens hissing will start to lesson as she realizes there is no threat.

My cat still hisses when the other one plays or play attacks her. You cat is just a hisser. As long as they have enough room to retreat to they'll work it out over time.
