How come they have coroners in the U.S.A.?

    I was thinking about the actual word. It means an agent acting on behalf of the king (Crown) to see if there was anything that the king could claim. That's why treasure trove goes before a coroner. Not to see if it's dead. America doesn't have a king.

    Because we have dead people in the U.S.A.

    Edit: Dear, the word was simply borrowed to refer to a particular type of official. In this day and age, it needn't refer to an agent of a Crown, a monarchy.

    Most likely the word was in use before the Revolutionary War. Afterwards, there was no good reason to change it, it was simply applied to the corresponding American official.

    We use the words "crown" and "coronet" in American English, too. They don't refer to an American monarchy.
