I feel I should write a book and I am..but some how things are not working out?

I feel I should write a book and I am but some how whenever I start writing a book (twice the process has been abandoned halfway), things suddenly get very difficult...my regular job becomes demanding, I need to give more time to my daughter (am a single mom) etc..Am I really destined to write a book? Why is it so tough? And it happens the moment I get something extra some big idea, things start going wrong..why?

Update:

Yeah but then why does the universe not help me? We say that when you really want something, universe conspires to give it to you..so why doesnt it help?

I have to agree with Whatever. Writing a book is not easy, and it never has been - the same way that learning to become a professional musician or athlete isn't easy. If it was easy then every person in the world would be writing decent novels and getting them published. It doesn't work like that.

I can't begin to tell how much has gone wrong with my whole year - it's been one thing after another - but I'm still managing to write. If you really, truly want to write then you have to make time to do it. Get up earlier in the morning so you have time to write. If you have to use public transport to get to and from work, write snippets of your book on the bus/train. Cut back on TV, or cut it out altogether and use that time to write.

Most authors never make enough to live on, and have to work a regular job alongside writing. They all manage to fit their writing in alongside the rest of their life, and if they can do it so can you.

And you can't seriously believe that the universe should help you. The universe is not a sentient being. It can't actually change your life. Really wanting something isn't enough - YOU have to make it happen. You are the only one who can write your book. You are the only one who can invest time into editing and polishing it. You are the only one who can be strong enough to face rejection - it happens to everyone. The universe has no control over that, and saying that the universe should be 'helping' you is utterly ridiculous.

If you want to write a book, then write it. If you feel you can't make time to do that, then maybe you just don't want it as badly as you think you do.

It doesn't matter who you are when it comes to writing. I'm a 20-something college dropout who's struggling to find employment. Though it does lend time to write, I'm still busy dealing with job hunting, family, etc.

Maybe the stories you've tried writing aren't the right ones. I've tried writing like six separate novels. I've failed five times in the past six years. I finally am close to finishing my first book. I'm like three chapters shy of completing my first draft. And then there's the whole editing/revision process to look forward to.

You have to keep in mind that a lot of author's don't write full time. They can't afford to. So on top of writing, they are balancing work and family too. And somehow they get it done. You just have to prioritize time for writing. If it's important to you, you have to give it time. If something isn't important, don't let it distract you.

Writing is always a tough thing. It amazes me that people think it's easy. There's so much more to it than just sitting down and pulling words out thin air and expecting them to be perfect on first try. You have to plan extensively, write as long as it takes to finish a first draft, and then revise it until you think it's perfect. That process could take years.

I've been working on my novel for three years. The first two were planning, note-taking, chapter outlining, and character bios. And then I actually stared writing.

Bottom line, you have to want it more than anything.

Writing a book is very, very, very tough. It's not something you do when you have snippets of free time. Even full time writers have trouble cranking out good stories. It will take a shipload of your time and you'll have to sacrifice some leisure activities. If you really believe that this book will be good and that you can write it, then do what you need to for it to happen. Focus on your best ideas and light up the keyboard. Good luck!

Writing a book was/is never meant to be easy. If you want to write it bad enough then you'll cut the self-pity and the "Wahhh! The universe is against me!" nonsense and write any chance you get.

Life is hard. So is writing a book. If you expect things to be easy you will be sorely disappointed on a regular basis.
