Why was this lady so upset?
We are looking after three cats. One is very old and grouchy and has very sensitive skin, the other is very young and energetic – both of the cats have a really strange meow and it’s quite loud. The other cat is just an outdoor cat who keeps himself to himself.
Well, last night I had an encounter with a neighbour who seemed concerned/upset. She asked me why my cats were walking up and down the street. I am in work all day and they tend to stay outside. Most of the time they stay in the garden but other times they roam around.
Before I could answer, she said “are they spayed?”. I said that all three cats were spayed and she even suggested that one of them sounded in distress because of the way she meows. I told her it’s just the way she meows and she started telling me a story about a cat getting pregnant.
She told me a dramatic story about how a little girl had approached her with concerns about the cat. They had kept her in their garage overnight and that she was approaching builders in a nearby street.
Now these cats are fed twice a day, every day. We keep them in most of the evening and put them outside during the daytime. We have them regularly checked up.
What was this woman’s problem?

She's likely had to remove dead cats off the road with a shovel. Pet lovers find this pretty traumatic. Having to do this for someone else's pet is not fun. Especially if the cat is still in the process of dying. I've had to take animals off the road and two were still alive even though their back half was crushed flat.

WHY CATS SHOULD NOT BE OUTDOORS
1. FIV and FeLV (FeLV kills in a year) Vaccinations are NOT 100%.
2. They fight with other cats (bites become abscesses and unless treated they die)
3. Cats eat snail bait in yards and garden and die
4. Cats eat rodents who have been poisoned and they die from the poison too
5. Cats lick up antifreeze (sweet tasting) that drips from cars and die horrible deaths (no cure)
6. Cats get killed by dogs, coyotes, and hawks.
7. Cats go to the bathroom in other peoples yard and the neighbors call animal control to take cats away and kill them or neighbor traps them and dumps them in the country to die
8. Teenagers, shoot, stab, and set fire to cats for fun
9. Indoor cats don’t get lost or stolen (“Bunchers” grab cats to sell for medical research)
10. Indoor cats live 15 – 18 years. Indoor/Outdoor cats live approx.. 6 to 8 years. Outdoor cats live 4 to 6 years. There are always exceptions however these are the averages.
Indoor cats don’t get run over.
11. People grab kittens/cats to feed to their pythons & to use as bait in dog fighting rings.
12. Very pretty cats will be stolen and kept just because someone wants it.
CATS ARE NOT DISPOSABLE ENTERTAINMENT!

She's one of the cats-should-be-kept-indoors nut jobs and she'll always be upset with anyone who has an indoor/outdoor cat. Since that's 90% of cat owners, that's a LOT of valium she's looking at.

Problem is your cats were roaming unsupervised outside where they could be stolen, killed or hurt. When you are not home to supervise them keep them inside!

You should keep your cats inside. It's better for the cats and for your neighbors.
