Why is a cat's fur sparse in front of its ears?
I've noticed that cats- all the cats I've met at any rate- have a patch in front of their ears where the hair is a lot less dense than on the rest of their head. Does it help them hear? Does it protect the ear in some way?

The sparse fur on most cat ears helps keep the ear clean, and free from ear mites. You still need to occasionally clean your cat's ears.

Some cats have less fur there but not all. My Siamese was like that but the Tabby I have now has thick fur and even a ridge right in front of his ears. The hair on the inside of his ears is thick and sticks out past his ears.

I think it's just because of the shape of the skull there, the hair is softer and sticks straight out instead of laying flat, so it makes it look thinner.
