Should there be engagement photos?
My fiancee and I have recently gotten engagement, and I was curious about engagement photos. Should they be taken? If so, how soon after you get engagement. What can they be used for?

Should they? If you want to, it is optional.
How soon? Anytime from the engagement to shortly before the wedding, there is no time table, since it is not a requirement.
What can be used for? For nearly nothing. People back in the day used to annouce their engagements in tne newspaper. There are hardly any newspapers anymore and people don't do that these days. Some people use them for the Save the Date cards, but it is a little corny. Most people just print a few for their home or family members. Most professional photographers give you a free engagement picture session as part of the wedding picture package.

Engagement photos are completely optional. Some couples get them because they're included in the wedding package offered by their photographers. Others get them because they want to use the photos as save the dates or something similar. Personally, we don't plan on getting engagement photos done - we feel the money could be better spent.

Nowadays it seems most photographers offer you a package deal whereby in addition to actual wedding photographs, they will also include an engagement session. Some people use the photos for "save the date" cards, and some just enjoy having more (and professional) photos as a couple.

It is completely optional for you. We recently got our engagement photos taken (a little over a month after being engaged) because we wanted pictures to be put on our save the dates. It isn't absolutely necessary though.

Engagement photos aren't really necessary, but it is up to the discretion of the couple. If you decide to take engagement photos, they can be used for save the date cards, before you send out invitations. You can also use them at your wedding on wedding favors (example photo frame) to give to your guests to appreciate them for coming.

You don't get engagement, you get engaged. that aside I have never heard of such a thing. People have all these silly beliefs about how weddings have to be done, but its all made up by the wedding industry to juice you. The most absurd is these formal wear rental stores. If you don't already own various levels of formal dress, then you should have a casual wedding.

They're completely optional.
We got them done because our photographer included them in our photo package at no extra cost. I was willing to pay for them, or to negotiate for them, because I wanted a "trial run" with the photographer before our wedding, since good photos were basically my only hill to die on for our wedding. That way, if we weren't satisfied with the engagement photos, we still had time to cancel our contract and find a new photographer. My husband didn't really care but he agreed because it was my only real "demand" for the wedding. Luckily we loved the photos and the photographer, and it put our minds at ease that we'd get great wedding photos from him as well.
We used the photos in a framed collage that I made for our wedding reception hall. I put a few on Facebook and we printed out our favorite one and framed it and it now hangs in our living room. I've also cropped myself out of a couple and used them for my LinkedIn profile picture and things like that.
We could have easily done without them, but I like having them.

You can and a lot of people do, but they aren't required. They can be taken anytime before the wedding. You can include them in wedding invites, or just have them for yourself to capture the moment in time when you were engaged. They are similar to senior pictures and maternity pictures.

They are optional,
My daughter had them done. We used them for save the date cards. We had a lot of out of town guests.
I hadn't had a professional photo of my daughter in years, and as they were moving across the country it was nice to have a photo of the two of them.
