In normal use affect is a verb and effect is a noun. There is a spurious use of effect as a verb: "to effect change." That makes my skin crawl. However, there is another form of affect that is pronounced with the accent on the first syllable and is a noun. It describes a person's emotional response to situations. A person who laughs when told about a tragedy has inappropriate affect (AF-fect).

(A)ffect for (a)ction. Something is affecting your comprehension in a good way.
(E)ffect for (e)xperience. You are experiencing the effect of learning proper English.
Source(s): Also think about cause and effect. The cause is what is doing the affecting. The effect is the result. There is no such thing as effecting. In your example above, the students were affected by the teacher. Or they had experienced the effect of the new teacher.
