A lawyer recently wrote the now famous book about "Three Felonies a Day." The theme of that book is that so many laws makes it difficult to impossible for average and law-abiding citizens to abide by them.
There was the case of Bobby Unser, the famous race car driver who got lost on federal land while snowmobiling. Unser and his friend were lost for two days. I think they suffered hypothermia, but the prosecution did not care. They cited Unser for snowmobiling in a federally prohibited area.
There was also the student, Sami Omar al-Hussayen, who helped maintain a religious charity website. A link or two on his website was connected to a site with anti-American slogans connected to Islam. DHS charged the student with providing "expert guidance or assistance" to terrorist groups.
There was a restaurant owner, Robert Blandford, who received lobsters in packaging that was unapproved by the exporting company. Blandford and several others went to jail.
I have also seen this personally. I have a friend with 10 and 9 year old children. Someone called the law because the two children were playing without adult supervision in the woods for a time thought too long by the snitch (90 minutes). My friend had to deal with CPS, even thought playing in the woods all afternoon was once considered normal behavior for kids.
I personally know several examples like this, not to mention all the examples in the news.
There was a time when you could make a mistake or do something like this, and it would not affect your entire life. That time has passed.

sometimes its not wrong (smoking weed) sometimes jail/prison don't rehabilitate people (95% of times) and instead makes it worse, now they cant get a decent job, and they cant support their family, crime is no longer a quick buck in this case its food for your kids.
prison/jail never rehabilitated its making everything worse and we are flooding this flawed system with non violent victimless criminal offenders and in turn forcing them into crime once they get out.
