The New Living Translation renders it helpfully like this:

"But many who are the greatest now will be least important then; and those who seem least important now will be the greatest then".

The 'then' is explained by Jesus in verse 28 - "...when the world is made new and the Son of Man sits upon his glorious throne, you who have been my followers will also sit on 12 thrones, judging the 12 tribes of Israel."

So this section of scripture speaks of a future time, in glory, when some who appeared to be of no importance in the world back then will be considered 'the greatest' then. God's selection of people and His positioning of them in His Kingdom is not based on the way this world makes such selections!

    Read Luke 13:22-30

In this earth the ones who are firsts love this world and the things of this world. They love the form of this world which is passing away serving the god of this world system the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eye and the pride of life. On the other hand, those who believe in Him and follow Him shall not perish but have everlasting life. Many who are first will be last (the judgment of the wicked and the second death) and the last first which is the judgment of the believer and the the first resurrection.

Go to the next chapter and read Matthew 20:1-16. It explains it clearly.

ALL who gain God's favor and receive everlasting life, receive the same reward. Those who served God for an entire lifetime and those who turn to Him at the last minute.

It has nothing to do with being rich or poor in this life.

That those of us that always want to be first, hold ourselves higher than others will be treated as lowly by God. God will hold us in very LOW esteem, while we hold ourselves in high esteem, thinking we are better than others, demanding that we get to do things first - get food first, be in line first, etc whatever. Those that are meek and wait, don't put themselves before others, will be treated with high esteem by God.

The ones who are first in their own minds, the haughty, will end up being last.

The lowly ones... those who are last, will be first in receiving Gods blessings.
