Is Donald Trump much smarter than his detractors and opponents make him out to be?

When he first launched his presidential campaign, people broadly thought of it as a joke candidate that couldn't come close to the nomination. As he starts making outrageous and controversial claims at his campaign rallies and speeches, the media did their best to paint him as a loud-mouthed buffoon. But Trump's strategy seems to be operating on the premise that "any publicity is good publicity" and he essentially played on that and took it to his advantage, he used that publicity to get his name out there.

I don't know if he can actually win the general election, and I have to admit, I question how much of his platform I can take at face value. But I have to give him credit for playing the media game and outlasting his Republican competitors and withstanding the negative pressure from the Republican establishment.

Update:

Now that Cruz and Kasich has dropped out, it's pretty much paved the way for Trump.

    Of course he is.

Oh, Trump may not be an intellectual. He may not be well versed in world events, or have encyclopedic knowledge, but the guy is shrewd.

He's spent a life time in business making things happen, making deals, reading people and negotiating. And his success over the decades shows he does this very very well. And now he's putting that shrewdness to work in getting himself elected President.

People love the fact that he's straight up and addresses everything head on. As much as I support him, I think it's unlikely he will win. The difference being a few million votes; the few million illegals who Obama brought in just in time for the election

    No.

Trump is very clever and obviously has excellent political instincts.

But is he SMARTER? No, absolutely not. Considering all the candidates this time around, Trump's intelligence would place him in the lower half.

Trump is extremely smart, he's just sticking to the brand that he has created over the years.

Which all works great in the Primaries against pathetic candidates. In the general election, he'd have to actually SAY something to win...
