Easiest way to clean an oven that has cheese burned on?

At least I'm pretty sure it's cheese. It's too burnt to scrape off, and I have no idea how long it's been there. I have never seen an oven this gross. (With my own oven, the occasional wipe down is enough to keep it clean, so I'm a little out of my element with this one.) Thanks!

Update:

Edit: The oven does have a self-clean option, but I have no idea how old the oven is. (It's in a rented apartment.) I've heard self-cleaning can break ovens or blow fuses, so I'm not sure I should risk it.

heat up the oven to warm setting, turn off ,place a bowl of water which has ammonia added , leave o/night ,this allows the fumes to degrease the inside , what ever is left that is caked on use a razor blade to scrape off, baking soda on a damp cloth is also useful

I'm not a lover of self clean. It makes the house smoky and it makes the oven door squeak afterwards. Wipe out all the crumbs, spray with "Easy Off no fume oven cleaner" in the aerosol can. Do not spray the heating element, thermostat or light bulb. Avoid getting any on the floor or cabinets. I can't recommend "Easy off Heavy duty oven cleaner" because it smells very bad and its dangerous. Wait at least 4 hours or overnight for the no fume oven cleaner to work. Wipe it out with a big (4"x6") sponge, rinsing sponge as you go. I do not use gloves but you can if you want to. You may have to scrub at some spots with a steel wool soap pad like SOS or Brillo. When you are done you will want to invite the neighbors in to see your clean oven :-).

Most modern ranges have a self clean option.
