Hi. I am researching the battle of "Hamel" 1918,the first time that American forces went into battle in WW1. American Information is scarce?
The battle of "Hamel" was an offensive that involved the Australians, under General Monash, in overall command, with supporting soldiers from the American Thirty-third or "prairie division".
The First medal awarded to an American soldier in WW1,Corporal Thomas Pope of the thirty third Illinois division, was won at "Hamel".He received the Army Medal of Honour, the British DCM and the Croix de guerre, so the statment that it was an all Australian battle is wrong.
So, The Americans went into a battle in WW1, under the command of Another countries general? Army, which is one of the Americans big statements about WW1, that they never went into battle in WW1 under the command of any one but an American.

It was an Australian action, not American. Try looking for Australian sources. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Hamel
General John Monash was a meticulous planner. His co-ordination of armour, artillery and ground forces was a bright idea that no one else on the Western Front had had for over 4 years. The Australians were very successful.
