Is it better to get a oil change through a dealership or local car shop?
I got my first car through a dealership and was wondering if it was better to get a oil change through them or a local shop like Jiffy or Tire Plus? I know dealership are more trained but charge more whereas local cost less.

There is absolutely no reason to have general services, such as oil changes, performed by a dealership. Only go to the dealership if you need warranty work performed.
Choose any reputable independent automotive center in your area to have basic maintenance services performed.

I worked for a dealership for 23 years and found that it doesn't make much difference where you get it changed. There are just as many incompetent kids changing oil at dealerships as there are in local shops. It's all just a toss up. I change my own.

The dealership are not "better trained". They just cost more. Any licensed shop can do an oil change and it WILL NOT affect any warranty. This has been tested in court.

The training doesnt matter an oil change is easy. I would do it yourself or at least verify what kind of oil they use. Some shops use very cheap oil in order to make money. Its best to pay a little extra for decent oil.

Well I don't think that an oil change is rocket science, so I would say you will be fine getting it done at a local garage and saving yourself the money by not using the dealership garage.

I recommend to all my customers to at least go to the dealer once every 6 months for an oil change. The dealer checks your VIN on their computer to make sure you've had all to the recalls done and if their are any PCM reflashes that need updating for free.

An oil change is an oil change. As long as done correctly (and its hard not to do correctly) then makes no difference who or where its done.

Here I find it best to have done in the shop were I buy my gas & L.P. at. As a regular they take extra good care of me.

I use dealership until the warranty is expired. Then whatever has a decent reputation.
