In the past 30 years, have doctors changed how they measure blood sugar?

Update:

Years ago, when I was pregnant, they said my fasting blood sugar should be near 140. Now I see that is too high and they want it much lower. Has the system of measurement changed?

Update 2:

Back then, they said a fasting level of 100 was too low.

Nope. Lab measurements of blood sugar are the same. How patients measure it (with meters) has changed.

The difference you mention is because we've learned that tighter (better) control of blood glucose is better.

The aim now is to catch and treat diabetes early..to prevent complications. They are advising to keep BS lower than they did 30 or 40 years ago. They still don't give good information on diet, however. Too soon to jump on the drugs wagaon.

Yes, they now routinely test for it!! Some 30 and more years back they did not, but treated the complaints the patients had which caused some really bad effects.

Yes. The lower your average blood sugar is the better it is for you providing it's not too low.
