No spare wheel fitted to many new cars....Crazy idea ?

I split a tyre after hitting a kerb late one Saturday afternoon 50 miles from home. No spare tyre. I had to arrange a lift home, car was recovered to dealer and new tyre fitted Tuesday and car returned home. Much wasted time, 100 mile round trip to collect me and 3 days without a car...........All because Car manufacturers have now decided not to fit a spare wheel !! Where is the wisdom in this ??

I hear ya, dumb stupid greedy people. I bought a car with no spare tire too but I was smart, I bought a spare tire for it, I'm not driving around without a spare. They are supposed to give you run flat tires on those cars but I guess they never thought you could have a blow out.

I bought one of those little donut tires, I hate those but they has so little space in the car, I had no choice, I didn't want to take up all the trunk space with a normal size tire. Couldn't find a used one so I wound up spending $250 for a new one. Usually in the junk yards those little tires go quick.

    kerb???"

I guess blaming not having a spare is better than blaming hitting a "kerb"

No. All because you are a bad driver and hit an immovable object. Lets lay the blame where it belongs shall we?

So why didn't you take that into account and take a precaution when you purchased the vehicle?

This is done to save money and space in the vehicle, along with reducing weight to increase fuel mileage. I would recommend that you go to a scrapyard and buy a steel wheel that will fit your vehicle, along with a used tire of matching size, if having a spare is important to you

One more reason I buy used vehicles.

Even if it originally came with a "donut" spare, I equip myself with a full-size one.

The bean counters have taken over all aspects of manufacturing. Everything is made as cheapest as can be made and and all operations are made to maximize worker output.

I dont repair stuff like I used to. I throw away and buy a new one.Saves me a lot of time and grief. My friggin coffeemaker had a switch that failed after 3 months. Stuff like that was unheard of years ago. And dont even get me started about printers.

Here's the "wisdom" in it, at least from the manufacturer's perspective: Say a manufacturer sells 100,000 of a certain car model per year and say a spare wheel/tire and a jack costs the manufacturer $80 per car wholesale. If the manufacturer decides not to include the spare tire and jack at all, they save $80 X 100,000 units... which is $8,000,000.

Not only that, but the manufacturer would have to sell the spare tire as a $160 option on all 100,000 units to make that same $8,000,000 profit by selling the spare as an option (or eat the $8,000,000 loss if they include the spare as standard equipment)... it's a lot easier for manufacturers to just leave the spare tire out to make that $8mil and hope that the customer doesn't ever need the spare than to try to convince people to pay extra for a spare (or to just include the spare and eat the cost).

Does it suck for the customer if they need a spare tire but don't have one? Absolutely. But apparently the manufacturer considers the money saved more important than angering a very small percentage of their customers who might need the use of a spare tire occasionally.

That's why you want to make sure that your insurance policy includes road service.
