Short answer - start a homework session with the easiest thing, like previewing a chapter, looking at headings, sub-headings, first sentences of paragraphs. Or work for 5 min. and take a break. Breaks are good but always watch the clock. The best breaks are natural ones - between tasks, after you have finished a chapter or written an outline, If you dawdle, waste time, decide how much time a task will take and then complete the task watching the clock.
Long answer - use healthy lifestyle to give yourself energy. If you've been spending all your time at work, don't. All work and no play make Jack a dull boy.
Great book - available in the UK via Amazon.
The researcher who has compiled evidence of how a variety of lifestyle changes affect depressed people - clinical, laboratory, and population studies - is clinical psychologist Steve Ilardi of the University of Kansas, who has identified six key lifestyle factors. If you go to Metapsychology, you can read a psychologist's review of Dr Ilardi's self-help book ("a splendid book"). The Kansas program is not hard - not even the exercise part. Exercise is very good. Even light exercise, as little as 20 min brisk walking a day, helps, and the person can add to that gradually, although they caution against getting carried away, punishing yourself with too much exercise until you're sick of it and quitting. Fun exercise - games, long walks with friends and family, are best. Other easy things - bright light, fish oil capsules. I would read the book for safety with therapy lamps and capsule dosage. Distractions - happy music, movies etc. -are good so long as the person doesn't rely on them too much and not get anything done.
Good students are good at budgeting their time. Along with your weekly schedule, have a list with due dates - exam dates, etc, - that includes non-school things like doing the laundry and things just for fun and getting exercise.
Are distractions getting in your way? Messy desk? Noise? Deal with these things. Papers should be organized - put in a filing cabinet or file box, or stacked neatly held together with clips until you file them.
