will swimming help me out.?
so I have been doing a whole body work out at the gym, its good but I'm thinking may be you should try something else just to see. so my aim is to get fitter, healthy heart lungs, lose a bit of fat though i am not fat, just have a bit of a belly, not that i want to put in the effort to see my abs, so i don't expect to see them so whatever.
Also (now this probably will sound weird) next year i would like to run a 5k or 10k but instead of running i want to do something else and use the 5k as like a test to see how i have progressed. and if i did swap what classes should i look for at the gym that focus on weight training so i can build muscle again, as far as i know it doesn't build huge muscle just definition.

Swimming is a GREAT full body workout. It's about the best there is, because you can work yourself from head to toe, but there's no impact so your body isn't taking a beating, nor is there risk of strain from lifting too heavy or too long.
I enjoy working out with weights and I really enjoy running, but those things can take a toll on the joints and spine. Swimming is good cardio and for overall toning.
I think it's great you want to run a 5K or 10K next year, but it is unusual to want to train for it by not running. That doesn't mean you can't do it, but I DO suggest you do some running, because it's a totally different workout than swimming (for example). Even treadmill running is a lot different than outdoor running, and if you don't train at least some of the time, in the same type of environment you'll be participating in (for your run), you may find you're a lot more sore after you run, or even risk injury because your body won't be used to the impact and that specific type of movement.
