The genealogies are of Mary and Joseph. Note carefully where KJV has a string of "son of X, son of Y..." that "son of" is in italics (in a properly formatted Bible) to indicate "added by the translators" in an attempt at clarity. But here they did violence to the genealogy.

So Luke should read, "Jesus ...being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, of Heli, of Mathhat..."

Why would that matter? In that day, men were the important ones in genealogy. The very first "son of" in KVJ obscures the truth -- that Joseph was the son-in-law of Heli, not his son. The physical line through Heli's daughter Mary is thus traced back to David through Nathan (Luke 3:31). Joseph's father was someone else, Matthew reveals ... Mat 1:16

And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.. Reading backwards, Joseph is also descended from David, through Solomon.(Matt 1:6,7)

Do we have any evidence, though, that Heli (Gk. Ἠλὶ, with the leading apostrophe an aspirant ("h"), and the "H" actually being the Greek letter eta) is the father of Mary. Here, we can look to the church's tradition, where Mary is the son of Joachim and Anna. What about Heli?

Funny thing about names; there are nicknames. like Jack for John, or Ted for Theodore, etc. Way back in the books of the kings in the OT, there is an equivalence between Eliakim/Heliakim/Heli/Eli and Jehoiachim/Joachim. II Chron 36:4 is II Kingdoms in the Greek Septuagint (LXX). The LXX uses these names there: Ελιακιμ (Eliakim) and Ιωακιμ (Ioakim, the same name used in Greek Orthodox Churches for Joachim, which came at us through Latin, and so the leading J. Turn it back into an I.)

So Eliakim/Eli and Joachim/Ioakim are interchangeable names. Curious, isn't it.

Anyway, your assertion is incorrect on two accounts. Legally, an adopted son even in those days was a full member of the family with all the rights and privileges of one's own issue. Secondly, Mary *is a descendant of David, and has the right of inheritance as well (you can dig into the legalities in Numbers 36 with the daughters of Zelophehad ). Jesus is eligible for David's throne either way.

The prophecy is fulfilled.

Mary was also of the lineage of David, according to Luke's Gospel, and the Throne of David will be established with Jesus at His second coming, as we are told in Acts 1. If you are following the scriptures along with the news media, you will know that prophecies are still in the process of being fulfilled.

The fact of the matter, God fulfilled his prophecy in the Lord Jesus Christ because the Lord Jesus Christ is out of the line of David, Mary is out of the line of King David, and Joseph's was not any relationship to the Lord Jesus Christ except a step dad, because the Lord Jesus Christ is eternal God. From Adam to Abraham there are 14 generation from Abraham to King David there are 14 generation from King David to the Lord Jesus Christ there are 14 generation.
