From the field of Christian Bible Study...does anyone know where the Apostle Paul writes about when to or not to sue a brother?

Could you share the book, chapter and verse, please?

    Christians are recommended to go to a Christian non-involved 3rd party for arbitration. In Matthew 18, Jesus Christ recommended that a problem between 2 Christians be taken to the person directly first, then if no progress, another 2 or 3 witnesses go with while the original 2 parties try again to work out the issue. If the problem is unresolved and one party refuses God's instructions, then the matter goes before the entire church. And finally if one person still refuses God's instructions, then the church considers them a heathen and the matter can go public at that point.

    I also want to point out that this is for when both parties consider themselves to be Christians. However, someone who refuses God's instructions is not Christian as Jesus Christ points out in Luke 8:21 KJV and Luke 6:46-49 KJV. If one of the people involved does not consider themselves Christian and has no interest in following God's instructions, then they go by civil law and it is lawful for a Christian to sue or press charges in order to expect justice and/or reparation of any financial damages or injuries caused by unlawful actions. It is loving to help someone realize the consequences of having to repair damages or restore people that their criminal actions have caused. It may help them consider ever committing that crime again if they are convicted and ultimately that helps them and any potential future victims of criminal actions they might commit if not being held accountable for crimes already committed.

    Of course it's best not to sue. But sometimes it is more loving to sue a brother than to allow another to suffer as a result. Ex: You have a child from an ex-husband who owes your child support. it'd be great if he's able and willing to bring his past due payments to date. But if not, it's better to take him to court that your son/daughter not suffer.

    Christians should not sue Christians (unless they don't act like a Christian).

    I'm not sure where or even if Paul speaks about this but Jesus did. (oops... looks like Paul did in the answer below) At Matthew 5:25 Jesus states: "Be quick to settle matters with your legal opponent, while you are with him on the way there, so that somehow the opponent may not turn you over to the judge, and the judge to the court attendant, and you get thrown into prison.

    In essence Jesus is telling us to seek peace even if it is not in our own best interests. He urged his disciples to be mild tempered and peacemakers and to eliminate causes for anger. Even to love our enemies as his heavenly Father Jehovah did.
