In Canada, you can own an AR-15 or any type of gun, but the police will take your gun if you're menatlly unfit. Isn't this a good idea?

Well yeah.

Canadian cops will also go pick up your guns and hold them for you if you have to evacuate because of a flood or forest fire.

But Canadians aren't raised from birth to be paranoiacs terrified of cops, each other, their government & everyone else like Yanks are.

Nor is Canada dumbed-down educationally like America's bizarrely been doing to itself since losing its greatness.

Calm, rational, educated and pragmatic Canadians just aren't clueless wild-eyed Yanks in perpetual panic over everything.

Who makes the determination that someone is mentally unfit? The police? Suppose a person has no record of mental problems and buys a weapon then kills? Canadians dont have a Constitution like the U.S. and they are on the bottom of the totem pole as far as influence and importance goes. AND they dont care about personal freedom and liberty as engrained in American society.

You are COMPLETELY misrepresenting EVERYTHING you claim about Canadian gun laws AND crime rates.

It is fairly possible that many Canadian laws conflict with US Constitutional laws, so it is not straightforward how you would manage that. Moreover, there is not always political support to move forward with such propositions. You almost always need a major crime to get politicians involved and you will always have some people who will brush any kind of restriction off the table with the back of their hands before they even begin to talk.

Finally, there is a lot in Canada that is profoundly different from the United States, more so than firearm laws. You can't just assume certain types of restrictions in place in Canada explain away most of the 500 percent difference because those differences makes Canada a bad approximation of how the US would like with similar laws due the other, very many differences that exists.

And I say this as someone whose bias would be to favor stricter gun laws, in absence of further investigation.

If you are unstable the police will not approve you for the purchase in the first place. And yes, if you did have one and became unstable you will have to turn in any firearms you own. Whether you get them back someday depends on your psychiatrists.

Also, to buy a firearm including a weapon like the AR-15 in Canada when you apply for your Firearms Acquisition Certificate (FAC) you have to state a reason why you feel you need such a weapon. We believe that you should only have a weapon adequate to meet your needs and no more. If you feel your need to to potentially fight off a future tyrannical government it will be pointed out that the government had the public out gunned over a hundred years ago and there are no weapons sufficiently big to meet that need.

By the way nothing can be more than 100% lower. 100% less means zero. I think you are saying that Canada has less than 1/5 the murder rate of the USA which means it is 80% lower than the US rate.

Yeah that per capita isn’t a direct correlation, there are a lot less people per square mile in Canada than there are in the US. A lot less. Not that disarming a lunatic is the wrong thing to do, I’m just saying there are other significant variables involved.
