Law enforcement officers, which to you prefer at traffic stops?

When pulling vehicles over, do you prefer the occupant wait until you approach and you can watch them reach for their drivers license and registration? Or do you prefer they have all that in hand ready to go? I ask because I always felt it made the officer/deputy nervous to see the occupant routing around and moving in the car before they walk up.

Reaching for something while the officer approaches will put him on higher alert. The safest thing to do is keep your hands visible, preferably on the steering wheel. If it is dark, turn your dome light on.

If he asks you for paperwork, tell him where it is and that you are getting it. Such as "My license is in my pocket, I'll get it for you" or "insurance card is in the glovebox, I'll get it for you"
