Either he's trying to throw up a hairball or its more serious. If he's not better in the morning take him to a vet.

It could be a hairball. You can take your cat in to your Vet, they will check out your cat to make sure nothing else is going on. I,m sure they can suggest a remedy to help your cat. Good Luck!

sounds like hairballs---pretty soon he will do that and then vomit up his last meal with a pile of fur--welcome to cat ownership!

I have 2 completely different cats. They spend much of their time cleaning their fur. That is what cats do. Consequently, they have to deal with hairball cough (i.e. coughing up the hairball) After 5 years of this they have become accustomed to my commenting and encouraging them when they do it and I think they just ignore me. But it is my entertainment to chat with them when they do it and encourage them to get it out and over with. They love me beyond description. They understand most of my verbal commands and comments. Not only do I have such a strong relationship with my cats, I have found that using the same routines with friends cats, I get very similar results.

It can be many things from the ordinary to the serious. One cause is hairballs. Get a quality hairball remedy from the pet store (Laxatone is a good one, avoid the crap by Hartz) and dose heavily with that. If the coughing does not stop, then yes you need to be worried and need to make a vet appointment. Cats do not cough for no reason, and that type of cough is often asthma, but can be the beginning of heart disease. Get a cell phone movie of the cough to show the vet when you go.

It sounds like he is gagging.

If it keeps happening, take him to the vet.

It sounds like there's a furball on the way up. Get ready to clean up. If your cat is an indoor cat try sowing cat grass for your cat to chew on. Cats with access to grass have far fewer fur balls.
