The Supreme Court's term begins soon -- Monday, October 3. Is it important that Kavanaugh (or someone?) be confirmed and seated by then?

Update:

If he isn't confirmed by the 3d, but some later date (say, Oct. 15) would he have to recuse himself from voting on any cases argued before the court in the period before he became part of it?

Well....what happens is you get in a situation where tie votes happen. When that happens it has to stay with the lower court and the possibility of having to re-hear the case when they have the full court gets real.

Short term it's not a big deal, but if you are talking about several years it gets to be an issue as the cases back up. It's better to have the full court seated when they hear cases.
