I have interviewed with two places?

The first place I interviewed with on 11/8. They said they still had a few more people to interview but I would hear soon. The next day the Ventura County fired started and they may have had to evacuate so I don't know if they have even been back. I'm not sure how long to wait on them.

This other place I interviewed at today and she said she would be in touch soon. It's been five days but I don't know if that's long or not, since they said they needed someone right away.

1. Is it ever okay to call a place when they said they would be in touch?

2. If one place offers me a job do I say I am still waiting to hear about another? If so, how long can I hold off on a decision?

3. If I accept at one place do I call the other and let them know?

4. I'm not sure if this happens in real life but if one place asks what the other is paying and offers me more, what would you do? I know it seems like well go with the job that pays more but is that always a great idea?

    1. Yes. Given the vague time frame of "soon" that you were given, having waited a week or more is an acceptable amount of time to wait before calling back.

    2. Do not say you're waiting to hear from someone else. Ask for time to think it over. How much time you can get really depends on the individual you're dealing with. If it's a position they're trying to fill immediately, they're likely going to want an answer within a few days.

    3. If the other place hasn't offered you a job, you do not need to call them.

    4. When deciding between two offers, keep in mind that while money is a big consideration, it's not the only consideration. There are plenty of other factors that can make one job better than another that have nothing to do with money. You just have to try to identify all those factors, look at the two offers side by side and make a decision.

You don't wait, you keep applying other places. You can call ONE time and ask if the job has been filled. And no, you NEVER should say you're waiting to hear from someone else

    1. Yes

    2. No. You can stall for a day or so by saying that you have talk it over with your spouse (or someone else if you're not married) before accepting the offer, but you can't wait long enough to get an answer from the other place.

    1. Yes, after a week it's okay to call and inquire.

    2. No, never say you're waiting to hear from someone else. Ask them instead how long you have to give your answer.

    3. It's not necessary to call and inform someone you interviewed with that you've found another job, but it can't hurt either.

    4. Unless one place is offering you a SIGNIFICANT amount more than the other, always choose the one that YOU want to work at more for other reasons.
