Why is my kitten pooping diarrhoea with bright red blood?

So.. my cat is 14 weeks old and we just brought him home from his breeder. He had all his microchipping and desexing documents. We had to drive 10ish hours on the way back home from picking him up. He stayed in his carrier the whole time. When we got home he had wet himself so we gave him a wash. Then, we noticed that when he went to the toilet, he had tan coloured diarrhoea with BRIGHT RED blood in it, which was a water-like drop of blood. What is wrong?

You need to take kitten to the vet. Hopefully, a vet is open, being it is the weekend, so that means getting on the phone right away and calling. Bring a sample of the poop, if possible, but even if you don't have a sample, go there with the kitten.

Often, stress can cause diarrhea, so this may contribute to the problem, but anything with blood in it is cause for concern. Often, with a new kitten or pup, a change in food can cause trouble, but it is assumed the kitten was not eating while in the car. If he was, a different food may have added to the trouble.

Parasites can cause a lot of issues. This may or may not be "worms", but other things such as as amoebic or protazoic parasites such as giardia or coccidia can cause issues, which are NOT controllable with normal wormers. DO NOT use otc products, especially for a kitten already experiencing diarrhea. GO TO THE VET.

If you can't find a vet open this weekend, you can try putting some canned pumpkin in his food. In general, you should find out what food the breeder used, and use that same food, but in the case of a kitten not feeling well, just canned food might be advised. Add the pumpkin to that. Canned pumpkin is a general stabilizer for either diarrhea or constipation in cats, dogs, kittens or puppies - BUT, this DOES NOT replace vet consult or treatment.

Once kitten is feeling better, use 1 cup dry food/2 tablespoons canned/1 cup water, feeding about three times per day at 3 to 4 months, as much as the kitten will eat. Young kittens should not be limited in amount of food, until after about 8-12 months.

Remember that diarrhea can cause dehydration, so take it slow in feeding until the diarrhea settles down, and CALL THE VET.

There are also serious diseases that can also cause diarrhea with blood, so if it continues, look up: distemper in cats - but it is assumed the breeder vaccinated for this.

Kitten may have been upset with a ten hour drive. DO NOT feed Purina dry food to cats with sensitive digestive tracts.

Young kittens can get diarrhoea for a variety of reasons most aren't dangerous. If there is only Spots.of blood there is probably some form of gastritis, kittens also can get a protozoal Infestation call Giardia this will require worming treatment if its the cause. He will need antibiotics potentially. Taking to the vet for a general check will be best they can treat appropriately. It could have just been caused by the stress of travel unlikely to be the breeders fault.

Without a microscope, no one can say for sure, but likely it's coccidia - a protozoa parasite common to kittens. Typically a kitten will carry it but show no signs until exposed to a stress situation such as being relocated to a new home. The usual treatment is a sulfur drug called Albon available through a veterinarian. This will usually clear up the problem completely in about ten days.

Get him to the vet NOW. Do not delay. Get a report from your vet on what is wrong and contact the breeder as soon as you have the results. The breeder should guarantee the health of the kitten before you take it home.

The cat was dehydrated and needed water. The blood came because the cats bladder didn't have water in it. Give the cat water and milk and cat food to get it back to health.

The breeder is a hack. Never give your money to those c*nts when you can adopt a healthy animal.
