need help with sick dogs?

My niece has 2 shi ztu , over 13yrs old, both are blind, both have hip trouble, dysplasia. taking pain meds. they sleep in cage for 8-10 hours. 5 days a week. I think they might be in Pain. I was told not to do anything. I think I should check with her vet.

Update:

I called the doctor on the pain meds, because the dog was twitching and a few times made a whimpering sound. He said if the twitching or possible pain did not wake the dog up, its OK. Unless she shows signs of pain while awake,

if these dogs are blind, for their own protection they should be confined when the family is asleep...and the family can rest peacefully knowing their pets are secured...if there is pain involved due to hip dysplasia or arthritis though the vet has prescribed pain meds for them, your niece should contact the vet and ask for meds that help.

I'm sure they need to go to the vet. But they are not your dogs - all you can do is tell them to get the dogs to the vet.

Other than suggest they go to the vet, there is nothing you can do. The vet will likely not discuss the dogs with you as you are not the owner. You have three choices - try harder to convince your niece to take them to the vet, report her to animal control, or just mind your own business :(

It's okay to get a second opinion, never hurts unless it starts a fight beteeen you and your niece.

A dog should never be locked up in its kennel 8 to 20 hours at s time. I can see if they were alert and watching, not alert and active but sleeping that much isn't normal. They could be in pain, they could be over drugged nobody can tell from the post alone.

Re older and have health issues they still need some mental stimulation and some kind of exerceise. We had a 28 year old Maltese and she did swimming every day (we held her as she paddled) it kept her joints mobile despite the arthritis in the joints and kept her walking unti the end. It wasn't fast but she was able to go out to empty on her own and could walk around to her bed etc. before we started the exerceise she slept all the time and refused to walk as she was too stiff and sore until we started her physical therapy program.
