unless you're specifically going to places that sell merch, you really don't need to watch anything for a trip to japan. think about it from another angle, the simpsons and family guy are popular cartoons in america, but you don't need to watch them to take a trip here

The most popular is One Piece but you won't be able to catch up on the anime if you start on episode one. As proof its the most popular, it's been the number one selling manga every year since like 2007 or 2008. You also can't go anywhere without seeing something One Piece related.

Try tokusatsu shows like the latest Ultraman, Kamen Rider, and super sentai shows.
