If you search with "NICE anxiety," you can read the recommendations of an official health agency in the UK. They rank 3 treatments according to their demonstrated effectiveness for most patients. Medicine (generally SSRs) is ranked 2 behind therapy (CBT). Self-help based on CBT is 3.

I would find a discussion group or groups for anxiety problems, talk to people that also has this, what worked for them and then go talk to your doctor. Does your doctor know you suffer from this?
