How can I acquire a copy of someone's death certificate?

My uncle died in 2002 and I am looking to get a copy of his death certificate for legal reasons. How would I go about finding and getting a copy? Thank you.

WHERE?  In the US and in MY State only the next of kin and/or Executor of the State is entitled to the Death Certificate.

My stepdaughters have spent 8 years trying to get their father's Death Certificate.  They believe that I had him taken off life support without medical evidence that he was brain dead, thus murdering him.  It's a complete waste of time and money, but so far, 8 years later, nothing!

If your request is part of a lawsuit your attorney can subpoena the information.

What country ?  In the UK, you can request (and pay for) a copy of any death certificate

I suggest you Google it for your country

You have to go to the courthouse and you have to do a record search of the year 2002 when he died and you're going to have to pay $30 to the clerk of the court for a certified copy and to present an identification.

Contact the County Recorder in the county where he died and ask for a copy.

Go to the funeral home where he’s buried. The director does that.

I have gotten those that I need from the local County Record Office.  Paid $20.00 for each including when I needed the birth cerfifict. If this does not work find your local State office for this, meaning their viticual records for death, marriage, and birth records.

The executor of his will might still have a copy if they're still holding the paperwork.

If you live in the US and know the county in which he died, you should be able to obtain a copy from the Courthouse at "vital statistics" I think the department is called. Be prepared to pay for it as it will not be free of charge.

My grandmother passed away in Pennsylvania and they use a company called VitalChek for requests of death certificates.  But it depends where the person died.
