Do you think my boss will accept my coworkers excuse if I use it too?
So for a while now, we haven't been hiring people. I have had to pick up a lot of the slack. It wasn't until today that I got angry at it all. A coworker called in because, in her own words, "she had something else to do." I was however assigned to do HER JOB. Well, tomorrow I have decided that I have "something else to do." I am thinking about calling in. Do you think my boss will have double standards for me? I have a good record so I think I can get away with it once.

Accept? You are free to ask for time off, but lying to your boss isn't a good idea.
It seems you'd be better off either meeting with your manager to discuss your grievances and or looking for a new job at a different company.

If you need a day off then ask for one.
Tell them you have some sort of emergency, or if you drive tell them you're having issues with your car if you have to call in.
Just don't call in too often, you can get into trouble for that.

You don't need to supply your employer with a reason why you will not be at work (unless it is 3 consecutive days).
If your employer insists on an reason, they are in violation of labor laws
