Make sure the wheels are properly aligned and balanced. Rotate regularly and inflate to the proper pressure.. Don't brush up to high curbs or over sharp objects. Don't drive like it's a race car, no squealing, spinning, or drifting.

If at all possible have your tires inflated with nitrogen. There's no water in nitrogen which will eventually corrode your aluminum wheels. Nitrogen will not gain as much tire pressure when they are hot so it will be OK to over-inflate them 2-3 pounds over the factory recommended pressure labeled on the drivers door post. Nitrogen molecules are larger than oxygen molecules so the tires won't leak down as quickly as air from a car dealer gas station or your own air compressor. Nitrogen will actually make tires last longer if the alignment is OK and pressure is within standards.

The best wheel & tire balancer is the Hunter GSP-9700 when needed. To find one near you go to the Hunter GSP-9700 website. There will be a box to enter your zip-code and a list of new car dealers, tire shops and private mechanics who have this machine. Don't forget factory recommended tire rotations at every oil change.

Most of the other answers offer good advice but I would add , make sure the suspension is in good nick. Worn suspension parts will cayse tyre to wear very quickly.

Maintain the correct pressures. Have the tracking checked annually. Have them balanced if you feel vibration through the steering wheel. Drive smoothly and they will last, assuming they are good tyres in the first instance. Rotation is unnecessary. Replace them in pairs. When you rotate tyres they have to bed in to a different axle which can mean extra wear and temporary reduction in traction.

Keep them properly inflated. Rotated and rebalance at prescribed intervals. Usually every oil change.

Check the tire pressures monthly and adjust them to the pressure recommended in the door jamb of the vehicle.  Don't only rely on a tire pressure monitoring system for this because some TPM systems will only warn when pressure is extremely low.  Keeping pressure consistent keeps wear consistent.  Tire rotations (every oil change or every other oil change etc.,) also helps tires wear more consistently.  Also be sure to have your wheel alignment checked and corrected as soon as you notice the car pulling to one side etc.  Bad alignment can very quickly ruin a set of tires.

Rotate tyres every 5k miles, check and adjust air pressure every month or more (depending if any air is being lost in that amount of time).

Keep them inflated to the right pressure and rotate them every 6,000 miles or so.
