Could I have sued my job for cutting my hours down to 1 hour a day?

A few years ago I worked at a grocery store, I did the evening shirt from 6pm to 9pm, until they cut my hours to having me work 8 in the morning and get off at 9, could I have gotten an attorney and sue that job for how they treated me?

When your employer cuts back your hours like that, you can often claim that you were effectively being laid off and quit and still be able to collect unemployment. Although employment after working only a three-hour shift probably isn't going to be that much.

There is nothing that prevents you from suing anyone you want. In this case however, you would not have had even a snowball's chance of winning. Attorneys are not allowed to file lawsuits that they believe are frivolous, so you'd have a hard time finding a lawyer to represent you. You would also likely end up having to pay for their attorney's fees.

The benefit to having a job with the hours that you do is that you're able to spend the remainder of the day out looking for a real job.

Depends on the laws of the State that you live in ... some States have "at will" policy.

No.  But you do have the right to leave and get another job.

Sure, but you would not have won.
