How can I put down my beloved cat when there is no vet?

I need to put my cat down, but I have no access to a vet. I live in a small town (2,000 ppl) and the closest city with a vet is over two hours away. I don't drive.

Bartleby is very old and his kidneys are failing, He has lost three pounds in two months and has no bladder control. He also seems to be in pain. How can I do the kind thing myself?

Perhaps you can find a farmer.  Farmers have to do this kind of thing on a regular basis, and they aren't necessarily going to go to the vet every time a small animal has to be put down.  Also, a hunter would be familiar with how to end an animal's life quickly and painlessly.

I could advise you myself, but I expect Yahoo! would penalize me for explaining how to kill an animal painlessly.

Get a ride to the vet.

Can you have a vet come to your house? Wont be cheap and I don't know if they would even drive that far but its something to look into and the best option if its possible.

Are there any shelters near you? See if they can help you out.

You can ask around fellow pet owners in your area if they knew someone. Honestly, this is no easy job and it would be too painful if you're going to do it yourself.
