I am editing my previous answer (The Curse from 1987) as you have provided more details which enabled me to locate it. It is Flesh-Eating Mothers (1988). After committing adultery with the neighborhood womanizer, a strange sexually transmitted virus turns suburban mothers into vicious flesh-eating zombies who turn on their offspring. At one point, two of the mothers grab a tabby cat from a dumpster, pull it apart and start to eat it.

A real classic would be The Hunger released in 1983, with a knock out cast including David Bowey. Another from the early 70's would be Night Of The Living Dead that was the beginning of zombie movies.
