The things that do not belong in marinara sauce are no onions, no wine, no meatballs, no anchovies, no tomato paste, no butter.

Yes, but you should puree them (and the garlic) into the tomatoes with an immersion blender so it's completely smooth.

Finely minced onion and garlic with oil is the basis for a good marinara. Then tomato sauce, fresh basil, etc.

There's a lot of people that put onions in red sauce. I won't be the one to fight with you about it.

A NYT marinara recipe only used garlic - has 5 stars and over 5 thousand reviews - I agree not necessary, but not the end of the world if you want to use some onion.

I'll fight you and I'll win! Yes, of course onions belong in marinara sauce. Grind 'em small in the food processor if you must, but you GOTTA have onions in your gravy.
Any tomato based sauce that doesn't have copious onion and garlic should be ILLEGAL to go anywhere near a plate of pasta.

Onions belong in every entree. And theyll save your life.
Garlic too.
Should eat them fresh and raw. But great for flavor in sauce.
