Why do the religious right keep saying America is a Christian nation ?

,In the sense they want America to be officially Christian. Doesn't the 1st amendment make it clear "Congress shall pass no law respecting an establishment of a religion nor prohibit the Free Exercise thereof." Our Founding Father's were Deists not Theists and they made it clear that Christianity is not mentioned in the Constitution. And the people who say America is a white Christian nation are the ones who are most afraid of the Muslims taking over, praying in public schools, teaching Islam and supporting Sharia Law. Atheists and Agnostics feel the same way about you saying America is a Christian nation the same as you feel about Islam and Sharia Law in America. Not that we are a Muslim country either of course.

They hate the Constitution and want to establish a theocracy with themselves in charge. They're totally anti-American.

Anyone who thinks the Constitution was based on scripture has never read it.

Read the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.   The way they dated the Dec of Ind is by using the Christian calendar.   They could have used any number of other calendars but they used that one.   If that is not enough,  look how they closed and signed the Constitution.   "in the year of our lord,  one thousand, seven hundred and eighty three."     Just what LORD do you think they were talking about?   Clearly a reference to Jesus.   Plus in early days and even up to the 1930s Jews were banned from many elected offices and even from country clubs and some housing areas.    An Obvious push to one view of God.    Lastly,   Why is Dec 25th a federal holiday?    It sure Ain't a special day for ANYONE other than the Christians.

Well, you're wrong. The U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights were based on scripture and basic human dignity espoused by their Creator. The U.S. is no longer "Christian" but secular, running off to God's fiery judgment in a hand basket.

Because it is a Christian nation who is taught to recognize that rights are not given by earthly government. They are from a higher source. Congress shall make no law, because freedom is prime in relation to the citizen and earthly government. It sounds like you are calling that a fault, when actually it is an agreed to protection from tyrannical government. I would also like to say that multiple levels of home protection is for the defense of the private citizen against tyrannical government.

Not all people on the right say that.

Anyway, people say all sorts of things.  Christians are obviously going to vote for legislators and legislation that they believe support Christian values.  They have that democratic right the same as an atheist has voting for godless and anti-biblical people and policies.

America has NEVER been a christian nation, and was not formed on christian values.  Actually, the US Constitution and Bill of Rights is very, very anti-Bible. The US Constitution guarantees religious freedom, and it guarantees that ALL GODS ARE WELCOME HERE IN THE US. ALL gods are treated equally, and none is raised above any other. But, what does the Bible say? The FIRST COMMANDMENT is the Bible god saying that HE IS THE ONLY GOD and that you shall have no other gods.

So, our US Constitution spits in the face of the First biblical commandment. We welcome all gods here and our nation views all of them as EQUAL, none is above or better than any other. The United States Constitution SAYS SO.

It's also a spit in the face of people who falsely claim this country was built upon christian principles. It clearly wasn't. When you look at the four primary founding documents of the United States -- the US Constitution, the Articles of Confederation, the Declaration of Independence, the Bill of Rights -- you'll notice a few things. You'll notice that our framers of these documents used a LOT of ink and spent a LOT of time writing a LOT of words to describe their most cherished values and goals for this country. In all of the words and documents, these words NEVER APPEAR: christ, jesus bible, christianity. Nowhere in any of our most critical Founding Documents, do any of those words appear - not even once. Yet, our country's founders poured their most cherished values into these documents when they founded our nation.

Suggesting this is a nation founded upon christian principles is total hogwash, and another way that frightened christians with low self-esteem lie about this country's founding, try and christianize it in the minds of anyone who will listen to them. Yet, nothing could be more false.

MAJORITY OF CITIZENS IN USA ARE CHRISTIANS.

  • So all the Protestant White men who fought against Roman Catholicism and the British Empire in the Revolutionary War were not Bible believing Christians?
