Guantanamo Bay!?!?

How come there is a US Navel Base in Cube; a country the US has been in conflict with since the Battista era?

The US won the Spanish-American War and Spain ceded Gitmo to the US, war spoils. Batista was a baby when it happened. Some say the Hearst Newspaper Empire was complicit.

--  The US gained control of Cuiba after the Spanish-American War. The US installed  right wing corrupt dictatorships where the American Mafia reigned supreme, and the US had major influence in Cuban politics.  The US were ceded Guantanamo Bay as a US naval base with an unlimited lease by the US controlled Cuban government.

--  The Cuban government under Fidel Castrol has honoured the lease and allowed the US to maintain the base.

The US was ceded control of Cuba by Spain after the Spanish-American war back near the turn of the 20th century. For a few years after that time Cuba was under direct occupational control of the US military while the federal government sorted out their imperial agenda. The Platt Amendment and some other stuff happened and suddenly Cuba had a new America sponsored government that had enshrined the righteousness of American military intervention in their constitution. Around this time we got Guantanomo Bay.

I'm only assuming the reason that it's survived everything since then is because Cuba realizes it's probably unwise to poke the hornet's nest that's been itching for an excuse to curbstomp it since the Revolution. But that's pure conjecture.
