I have a wireless adaptor 802.11b/g on my laptop and the router i want to connect to is 802.11 a/g , i got connected but the internet doesnt work...... SO how to get it working

I tried connecting my PC with windows Xp sp2 and my laptop with vista, to do so i took the cat45 cable and inserted it in the lan card of my pc and the other end to the laptops lan card. But the problem is both do not identify each other , i tried remote desktop and every thing possible , but i am unable to connect both pcs

well there is a very serious problem in my computer since many months.
My computer always works on 100% performance, whenever i open the task manager the computer is always showing the CPU usage to 100% and it slows down my work. I have a high configuration PC with core 2 duo, but the CPU usage is always full. When i got to processes the explorer uses the computers full memory usage. I installed new operating system because i thought that my computers OS would be having some problem but then again the same problem arrised. This is the 4th OS i am working on but there is no change. I can bet 1000 bugs that its not a hardware problem. Please help me solve the problem. I tried installing the 4 different OS from 4 different CD's,

I was reading about grid computing after knowing about the LHC.... but i dont understand how those super computers transfer data at such a high speed.... because the LHC piles up data equal to a CD per sec.... but there are no net connections available on planet earth which can transfer data at a mind bobbling 700 mbps.... so how is the data transfered....... than how can there possibly be such a huge network???????????
