Complete DVD of modern footings & foundations for homes (for noobs)?
Hello all,
This question is aimed at professional contractors and people who have built their own homes.
I'm looking to build my own home, but I have never done professional home building. My knowledge of construction lies in finished carpentry like kitchen cabinets, drywall, molding, basic plumbing & basic electrical like running wiring for lights and switches. This is nowhere near the stuff I need to know for building my own home. I know how big of an undertaking it is. I'll be working with my local county and city offices in California for what they want, but in the meantime, I'm looking to learn. I appreciate any help :)
I found a few full length dvd's for home building and they are EXCELLENT. It's 3 DVD's called "A Fine Homebuilding DVD Workshop with Larry Haun". He goes over everything involving wood framing from foundation to roof. He explanations in great depth every aspect of installing floors and stairs, walls and roofs. Basically anything involving wood in the home.
What I'm currently working on is:
*Concrete footings and foundations*
All the different types and the details of each type along with a step by step hand on tutorial explaining how to pour the concrete, lay the bricks, etc..
(I want to do a raised foundation / basement combo with a stem wall and piers for the raised foundation)
There's information on Youtube, but I was hoping someone knew of a really great DVD on the subject. Electrical and plumbing too maybe thanks!!
1 AnswerDo It Yourself (DIY)7 years agoGigabit 1000 mbps on At&t DSL for Gaming PC?
I'm not sure where to start. lol. I was just on the phone for an hour and a half. First, I was probably transferred to India, since I couldn't understand anyone... after being transferred 4 times back to the U.S., they said I was transferred to the wrong side of the country over in California, at that point I just hung up. I'm sure you guys are much smarter anyways, so here's my questions:
Summary: I have the At&t DSL 8mbps plan which is the largest they offer for my area (No Uverse). I only get like 5.8 mbps dl, but that's wireless right now and I plan on going the LAN ethernet way. So, I want Gigabit 1000 mbps port speed, because I think it will help. Obviously, information will only travel as fast as it's slowest part. I currently have an At&t wireless modem/router combo 10/100 (1 unit). I want to buy an aftermarket router and an aftermarket modem if needed. I will also buy an internal gigabit network adapter for my PC. I'm listed this in number order to make it easier, starting from the street and working my way into my house with these questions:
1. Service comes in through a regular old telephone line from the street. Can this carry such a fast signal as gigabit 1000 mbps technology?
2. Do I need a DSL modem to take in this telephone cord and convert it to an ethernet cable? WHAT MODEM DO YOU RECOMMEND? Most of the modems I see are cable modems but that's not what I have.
3. Is this overkill? Here's the router I've chosen: http://www.amazon.com/RT-N66U-Dual-Band-Wireless-N...
4. Here's the cable I'm buying: http://www.amazon.com/Mediabridge-Networking-Cat5e...
5. Here's the network adapter I'm buying: http://www.amazon.com/Intel-Gigabit-Network-Adapte...
My MAIN questions are: am I starting out with 1000 mbps port speed coming in from the street with a telephone line AND what modem do you recommend. Is gigabit port speed technology really going to help my internet that much? Is it worth buying all this new equipment? I've heard of people using switches, would this take the place of a modem? The less I have to buy the better. Any recommendations? I'm still learning, but this seems like it might help. Thanks!
2 AnswersComputer Networking8 years agoPC Gaming network card. What do you use?
Ok so ya, I am not a gaming noob, and I'm not totally ignorant of PC tech talk, but I am trying to learn more. I have a good idea of my perfect gaming PC, but I don't know much about properly configuring a network for internet connections. My FPS on BF3 is up in the 80's to 120's so I'm good there, but my internet if fussy. I currently use a [Belkin F7D2102 N300 Micro Wireless N USB Adapter] and that's it. Ya, I know it's probably wrong, but it's so easy lol. I don't even know if it's properly configured, my internet is constantly dropping and the icon in the tray says my IPv6 is not connected. So stupid. Anyways, I'm curious what you pro PC gamers out there have? Here's my questions:
1. Do any of you do wireless or is it a MUST to do wired?
2. Do you have an internal network card or external?
3. Is there any software that can assess your internet connection and configure it for you?
4. Any other tips or tricks that you can recommend to really boost my signal strength?
5. What is your internet setup, including compatibility and configuration?
It looks like people like the Killer 2100 with bigfoot software, is that correct? Anything else I should know?
Thank you all for your help :)

1 AnswerSoftware8 years agoYour top 10 List of Open World / Free Roam Games with 6mo to a year of gameplay?
I have literally spent years playing these awesome games. I'm blown away by the imagination, storylines, gameplay, amount of detail that goes into these games. As much crap as people talk on Bethesda, noone compares to the amount of character and depth they put into their games. They have set a new standard for FPS RPG's. Rockstar games is a distant second simply because of their Red Dead game. Ubisoft now for Assassins Creed & Farcry 3. F3 is awesome, however, it can be beaten in 4-5 days of casual gaming, including finding all the treasures and hideouts. I'm really hoping that other developers follow suit with Bethesda. I don't care about a few minor glitches.. I want more fallouts and more TES!!! Skyrim was the longest I've ever played a video game and I loved every minute :) Seriously Bethesda needs to triple their staff to make more titles lol
Anyways, here's my list:
1. TES Skyrim
2. TES Oblivion
3. Fallout 3
4. Fallout 4 New Vegas
5. Red Dead Redemption
6. Assassins Creed 1
7. Assassins Creed 2
8. Assassins Creed 3
9. Assassins Creed 4
10. Mass Effect 2 (Kind of free roam)
NOTE: L.A. Noire was boring for even me, and I'm an huge RPG fan.
NOTE: Not a fan of the GTA's, regardless of the reviews
NOTE: all hackers slashers are boring to me (Dark Souls, etc..)
Anybody got any suggestions? I'm tired of BF3 online... I need a really good open world game to play.. I need my FIX!!! hahaha
7 AnswersVideo & Online Games8 years agoIs there a website for honest ISP consumer reviews?
It is pretty obvious that the ISP market is what is known as an Oligopoly. Similar to the oil companies. They all get into a room together and decide what they are going to charge. It doesn't matter whether it's reasonable, because their existence is decreed by the US government and we have no choice if we want high speed internet. We bounce around from At&t, to Comcrap, to cablevision, to time warner, etc.. All of these major internet companies hold exclusive rights to select areas. The smaller companies simply cannot compete. My hope is that eventually Americans can take the power back and stop this type of corruption by giving our money to legitimate companies thereby creating competition. (I hope Google Fiber goes nationwide)
Currently, I'm being throttled. I have a 200gb plan here in Georgia with At&t bellsouth. I'm promised up to 10mbps, but I only get 5mbps usually using their equipment and hooked up "professionally" ';p by them. I am currently down to .25 mbps ...... really? I haven't used 10gb this month out of my 200gb plan and I'm getting throttled?
That said, I'm looking for a website that promotes this type of discussion. A site that values truth and does not filter user comments. A site that allows USERS to rate these ISP's and give comments or recommendations. Does such a site exist? If it doesn't exist, someone should make one. Thanks
3 AnswersOther - Internet8 years agoif you can legally carry a firearm and shoot someone that is attacking you, would you still get arrested?
Don't worry, I'm not planning on snuffing somebody lol. I'm just curious. I am a law abiding citizen and a good person, but god forbid I get in a position where I would need to use my weapon (which I'm licensed to carry, either concealed or open carry), would I be taken in handcuffs to jail? I don't want to look guilty if I'm protecting myself by being dragged away in handcuffs with cameras on me and taken to a place where criminals go. That's not right. Good people shouldn't go to jail for protecting themselves. I don't mind someone trying to fight me and me fighting back, but surrounded by 8 guys with weapons, you're damn right someone is getting shot.
A little back story to better understand my point. I have been to jail once AND ONLY once in my life. My ex gf was a head case (social anxiety, paranoia, delusions, black outs). She was beautiful, but completely nuts. Notice the "ex" part. I didn't realize it until later. Anyways, we got into an arguement and she had one of those moments where she didn't know who she was or where she was. She threw gatorade in my face, then a whole can of old cigarette butts, then took a knife to my favorite painting. A knife in one hand and my favorite possession in the world in the other. I called the police. Let me say that again, I called the police. The San Diego County Police Department showed up. Spent a lot of "extra time" with my ex (the pretty girl) and then took me to jail. I told them exactly what happened including that she has a mental condition and they said "we're sorry, but when we come out, we have to take someone to jail". I am not leaving out any details. That's exactly what happened. No physical contact whatsoever, just one crazy girl and some heated words. I went to jail for a week because a stupid reason. If I could go to jail for not doing anything wrong, what if I used my firearm in self defense?!?!
But based on the majority of police officers I've met and things I've seen, I don't think they would care who was at fault, if you had a gun and shot someone, I think a some officers would treat you like a criminal just because a firearm was involved. I would love to hear from a police officer or someone that knows about this.
(And please people... I I00% believe that we have to right to bare arms, so don't get on here spouting a bunch of garbage about not owning a firearm. There are evil people out there, I've met them. Don't tell me there isn't a reason to carry. You live in a sheltered world if you think that.)
8 AnswersLaw Enforcement & Police8 years agoDub hip hop / Chillout similar artists HELP! (Flying Lotus, Pretty Lights)?
All you creative musical geniuses out there on the cutting edge, I need some help. So, I'm finding some really great music for my next set and I'm really want to hear some really good beats that you guys like. My favorite kind of music is "dub hip hop" with electronic infusion. I also like that type of music with like a tripped out female voice or something. Basically here's some words that might describe my style better: dub hip hop with rap clips, heavy bass, funky, 2 step beat, chillout, experimental but linear, new beats, weird sounds, mellow, beautiful, atmospheric, echo, etc.. Here are some Youtube examples of something that might get your brain going:
This one (Submotion Orchestra - Blind Spot) is kind of considered "melodic dubstep" but pretty much exactly defines my style, you'll get the idea:

So does this one, notice the rap clips very light & echoed in the background (Pretty Lights - Until Tomorrow):

These also are good songs, I try to fuse these different music types into my style:

5 AnswersRap and Hip-Hop8 years agoMonthly salt loss in reef tank?
Never done a salt water tank before, but I feel very confident at this point after much research. I'm a truck driver though, so I'm out on the road for about a month. I've taken care of the water loss problem with ATO RO/DI. I'll be having someone do regular feedings for me. The one thing I'm curious about is the PPM saline level. I'll just be doing a 29 gallon tank with a 20 gallon refugium. So would a monthly water change with a refractometer salt check be too long?
How much salt do you guys typically lose in a month's time? How much salt do you have to add typically?
1 AnswerFish8 years agoIs this protein skimmer too big for my tank?
I have a 29 Gallon Aquarium & about about 20 gallons in the sump /refugium. That's about 49 gallons total. Is this skimmer too much for this system? Also, can I run this thing outside of the sump? I don't have any more room in my sump and it wouldn't fit anyway. Can I run this one externally and pump it back in? Thanks!! See skimmer below:
2 AnswersFish8 years agoNew Georgia CDL (class A) permit not showing motorcycle?
I already have a motorcycle class M on my license, so it currently looks like "CM" class. Regular Class C and M for motorcycle. But I just passed the CDL test to get a class A CDL license. It looks like this right now: "AP" I'm assuming that means Class A CDL and the P is for permit.
Are they going to add the M class back after the permit is over? or did they forget to add it? I really don't want to go back to the DMV, I've been there 5 times for the testing. Such a pain. Thanks :)
1 AnswerOther - Cars & Transportation8 years agoNew Video Card not displaying.. HELP!?
Hi everyone,
Well, I currently have an LGA 1156 setup. I'll be updating to 1155 z77 with hyperthreading soon, but I'd like to get some use out of this awesome high priced video card right now! The video card that works right now, is my old radeon HD 5450. Starts up perfect.
Current setup:
MOBO: GIGABYTE GA-H55M-S2V LGA 1156 Intel H55 Micro ATX Intel
Processor: Intel Core i5-760 Lynnfield 2.8GHz LGA 1156 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor BX80605I5760
PSU: Corsair Professional Series AX 850 Watt ATX/EPS Modular 80 PLUS Gold (AX850)
GPU: SAPPHIRE FleX 100352FLEX-2 Radeon HD 7950 3GB 384-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card OC with Boost
Yes, I know I'm bottlenecking the video card, but I'm sure it should work fine until I can afford what I want.
I should be able to simply disable onboard graphics, plug the video card into the correct slot & properly secure it (seat it correctly), start the system up, at which point the graphics card should be showing something, like the boot menu. Then I should see Windows installer checking my new hardware... and install the drivers. I just have black screen. The video card starts up and runs fine, and I pretty much have the nicest PSU you can get and it's brand new. I've had to play musical video cards like 10 times now. Every time, I try something different and reinstall the hardware. Nothing works.
I've read a lot of forums and I've done a ton of troubleshooting. Here's the things I've tried in no particular order:
1. Disable Onboard Graphics - There's no option in my bios for it. My mobo has no onboard graphics per specs, so I don't see a way of disabling it. It has the ports for VGA and DVI, but they don't work. After checking Newegg, where I got it, I think it's made to only use a dedicated graphics card. Using my old video card, when I go to device manager and disable the only thing listed under "display adapters" which is my old currently installed 5450 GPU driver, I can still see my desktop, but I'm assuming that's windows 7? This is really confusing me, because it seems like I'm not doing something on this one and it seems like this is the one holding me up, but I don't have an onboard graphics card?!?!!
2. Resetting CMOS - I see the little CMOS pins on my motherboard, but there are only 2 pins instead of 3 and I don't have a plug to put on it anyway if I ever had one. In the bios, I was able to reset my CMOS settings I think, it was called something else like restore CMOS or something, I'm not sure. Don't know if it achieves the same function either.
3. Flashing the MOBO. - I used the included software @bios by Gigabyte to update the bios firmware to the newest version 3. I'm assuming I don't have to use Q Flash in the bios startup settings, because really, that's what the @bios software is for, and it worked perfectly. It shows my current bios version as the latest. I also loaded the default bios settings afterward. No luck.
4. Updating Catalyst Control Center - It's updated. I was thinking about trying to install the correct driver separately for my new video card, but they seriously want you to use CCC to do it, so I can't find the driver by itself.
5. Enabling Multiple Graphics Cards - I don't see an option for this in my bios. I would love to do this if I saw it somewhere. At this point, I've disabled the old video card driver, just in case it was interfering.
6. Init Display First - The only thing related to video in my bios settings: Advanced BIOS Features>Init Display First>PCI Slot or PEG or PEG2 - I've tried all of these with no luck.
Everything works perfect with the old card every time so there's nothing wrong with my computer... until I try to install the new video card. The card lights up and the fans start running, but no video output. My whole computer is also on and doing things, but I can't tell what it's doing. I think the initial beep is different, not sure, but it sounds like one long beep and 2 short beeps. The video card is seated in the video card slot and it clicks into place. My only other thought is this very expensive card is DOA or my Mobo can't handle it. I'm going bonkers, please HELP!!!

1 AnswerOther - Cars & Transportation8 years agoHigh end gaming computer setup, any recommendations?
I've already bought a lot of this stuff. This is going to be my home computer, work station and gaming computer for the next 10-12 years hahaha. I think this is one powerful & expensive setup for gaming and anything else I choose to do with it. I used a PSU calculator (http://www.extreme.outervision.com/PSUEngine)... but it seemed to be way off (455 watts) because the video card itself is rated for 500+ watts. I'm pretty sure the power supply is more than sufficient (Corsair Pro 850 AX), if someone can please verify that, that would help. Any other helpful hints or thoughts? All suggestions are welcome!! Ok, so ya, i'm an idiot. lol I just regular formatted my new SSD (not quick format). I just read someone saying that you can use "secure erase" to undo the damage you did when you hard format an SSD. I heard that regular formatting an SSD marks all of the blocks as used. I'm using Windows 7 64 bit if you need to know.
I need to know how to do this. I don't know if there's a program I need to do it, or is it built into Windows... I don't know. Please someone give me a step by step to make my SSD right again!!! Thanks
1 AnswerDesktops8 years agoIs Socket LGA 2011X79 going to replace LGA 1155?
I know chipsets can vary. I also know that 1155 replaced 1156. I'm looking at the ripjaws memory which everyone is so fond of, and it's listed as this:
"Quad channel kit for Intel X79 LGA 2011, XMP ready" "Quad channel memory designed for Intel LGA2011 and X79 systems, but also Compatible with Intel LGA1155 and AMD Llano/AM3+ platforms"
It appears that somebody is gearing up for this new platform. I'm fairly knowledgeable about computers (no expert by any means), but I also fell into the trap of buying LGA 1156 5 years back, so now if I want to upgrade, the only thing I can keep in my 3 x 2TB Hard drives... everything else is basically junk. I don't mind switching out parts, but completely switching platforms & rebuilding is completely stupid and a waste of money.
My parts are still pristine condition, but I can't upgrade... so before I sink several thousands of dollars into a new ultimate gaming PC, i want to know what you smart techy people out there know of the future. I have a feeling that 1155 may be on the way out in a few years, but like I said, I'm no expert. What do you guys think? Is 1155 going to be here for 10 more years or is another socket/platform taking over already? Feel free to rant about other important things, I really want to learn more Thanks :)

2 AnswersDesktops8 years agoUseable installed memory HUGE difference!?
I just upgraded to 2x8=16gb of memory. I heard that Windows 7 (especially 32 bit) takes quite a bit of the memory for hardware processes and leaves you with an amount called "useable installed memory".... but mine is ridiculous!!! 16gb installed, but only 3.21 gb useable!?!?!! I'm looking to get 2 more of the full HD LED Viewsonic monitors like the one i currently have to make a 3 monitor gaming station using the Sapphire 7950 FLEX edition (eyefinity) graphics card:
http://www.amazon.com/Sapphire-DL-DVI-I-SL-DVI-D-P...
I'm at a loss as to whether this will work in my current configuration. I've read that you should consider these things:
1. AGP or PCIe (pretty sure I'm PCIe x 16 lanes?? but the amazon listing says it's PCIe 3.0??)
2. Does Voltage / Amperage match the motherboard?
3. Is the power supply powerful enough to run everything i have, plus the graphics card?
I looked at the specs all over the web and it says this:
384-Bit GDDR5 Memory PCI Express 3.0. Is GDDR5 backwards compatible or does that even matter? Long version or short version is fine, I just need to know if I can just install the 7950 Sapphire HD FLEX edition. PLEASE HELP!!! o_O
