  • How to delete a file??

I am trying to delete a file. It says to do so, I need Adm permission. It even names me as Adm, but won't let me delete the file. Just keeps repeating same message (You need Adm's permission).

OK - so, as Administrator - how do I give permission? What do I have to put in to do this?

Hope I explained this clearly. This matter comes up several times when I want to delete a file - but I never can because I don't know what to do to give permission. Therefore, I have files I don't want on my laptop.

Any help you can give this "Very Non-Techwise" Senior will be appreciated. Thanks.

  • HOW DO YOU MAKE FONT LARGER ON AN EMAIL PRINT OUT?

I am trying to learn to use my new printer (HP Envy 5530). It's wireless.

Finally can send an email to it from my laptop - Windows 7, Home Premium - but when it prints out, the type is too small for my failing eyesight to read. Same for sending email from my Android tablet.

I also printed out an article from on line - that was a full page of the smallest type possible, I think. Need a magnifying glass to read.

Not too happy with the 5530 at this point as I get more paper jams than print-outs. But that's another problem to work on.

I am pretty new to this computing thing, so any help you can give this old Gal would be much appreciated. Is there something I should set on laptop for font size before I type the email? No Tech Terms, please, I won't know what they are. Thanks....♥

  • SENIORS -Are you getting these SCAM phone calls?

For 2 weeks now I've been getting a phone call (practically every day) from a company that "just doesn't sound right". It goes like this .......

You have been selected because you have recently fallen, or know someone who has fallen. You know, for like what you see on television "I've fallen and can't get up". (Notice they don't give name of their product.) You have been approved for a free medallion and free shipping - just Press One to get this service.

This sounded so phony to me from the first phone call > told them I wasn't interested, but they persist. Told them to stop calling me, or I'd report them to the Do Not Call people, but they still persist. Sometimes it's a live person - other times it's a recording.

Sure enough, on the news this morning, there was a warning from Life Alert (a legitimate service) about these phony calls. LA said they do not solicit people by phone. The newscaster warned they get your info and then you are charged $35.00 a month - for no service whatsoever.

Just wanted to give our SCs a heads up. If I'm getting these calls, maybe you are too. Be careful, and just hang up on them.

How do these Scammers sleep at night? Would do anything for money? How would they like it if their parents were fleeced like this.

Just wanted to alert you. Be careful out there! ♥ ♥

  • Which new Yahoo e-mail should I choose?

I'm on Original now, but Yahoo is making us all switch in July 2013.

When I try to click into Mail now, what comes up is a "plea" from Yahoo to switch. They are giving me a choice of Full Featured (Recommended) or Basic, but do not spell out the advantages of each.

Does Yahoo have a site giving details on the 2 plans? Right now I think I would only need Basic as I use e-mail only to Receive, Reply and Send. Not computer savvy so don't know how to send pictures as attachments and all that other good stuff you Techies can do.

I know Yahoo monitors Answers. Can you direct me to correct site for info.

Also, those who have switched - how's that working out for you?

    Thanks.

  • Senior Citizens - have you ever tried to add some more info to your question?

It happened to me again. I put in additional info to my question (re gray hair), and when I clicked Submit, I got a notice that Yahoo Answers was not available. Tried again, and Yahoo printed my Additional Details 3 times. Last time I did that, Yahoo printed the addition 4 times. Hope people don't think I'm getting really senile and repeating myself over and over.

Has this happened to you? I used to be able to make an addition with no trouble. Ah the joys of the new Yahoo.

  • Can you help me - YA has gone crazy....?

I asked a question and wanted to edit it. Additional Details block came up. I added to my question and YA printed that 4 times.

Used to be if I caught a mistake in, say, spelling, I could correct it by clicking Edit. Now they only allow you to put in additional details. How can I get rid of the repetitions on my question? People must think I'm nuts putting the same thing in 4 times. Can you suggest a remedy?

  • Do you know what National Day today is?

Just found out this morning that today is National Eat Anything You Want Day.

As I always try to be a good Citizen, I will indulge.

Since anything goes for today, what are your suggestions for something good that you would not normally have? Could be sweets or a large steak and potato meal - since we don't have to worry about our usual diets.

I'm headed for the store this afternoon. Can I pick up something for you?

  • SCs - Can you help me with Arizona time vs Pennsylvania time?

I'm confused. I asked my nephew, who lives in AZ, what would be a good time to call him. (I asked him to tell me in PA time.)

But he sent me an e-mail saying he gets home from work about 6:00 pm and goes to bed around 10 pm. He says these are Arizona times.

Arizona does not have Daylight Savings Time. They were 3 hours behind PA. Are they now 2 hours behind us? Thus, if I call him at 9:00 pm PA time, would it be 6 or 7 pm in AZ?

No doubt you'll find this a foolish question, but I did ask him for PA time and am now confused. Your help would be much appreciated. I am asking our good Seniors because YA wants to put this in the Politics category where I'd probably not receive any answers, but Seniors are always ready to help. Any Arizonians on here?

  • Can you help with a 1099R form question?

I still fill in the IRS forms and mail them in. Been doing that for over 60 years. Not savvy enough on a computer to do it that way.

I've always attached copy B of my 1099R forms to my tax return. Now I see it says "If this form shows federal income tax withheld in Box 4, attach this copy to your return". Box 4 on my 1099R is blank, so am I right in thinking I don't have to enclose the 1099R forms?

Want to mail my return in tomorrow (4/8) and want to get it right. Am I correct when I assume the IRS has the info from 1099R on their computers and no need to enclose them any more?

This may sound like a silly question, but things sure have changed since I filed my first return in 1953. Help, please, time is running out. Your reply would be so much appreciated.

  • Why would my printer do this?

I was trying to print out an IRS form. It showed on my screen, but when I hit print, a Yahoo home page from November 2012 printed out - all 4 pages of it. I was trying to print the form on 3/26/13.

My question really is, why didn't it print out the form that was on the screen, and where in the world did that old Yahoo page come from? My printer is an Epson - nothing fancy; not wireless. Do things get somehow saved in a printer's memory that you haven't put in to save? If they do, how do you find out what's in there? Those 4 pages that printed out used a lot of expensive ink.

I'm so new to computers (and printers) that there are things that happen that just mystify me. So I come on YA to get help from all of you that are computer savvy. Thanks.

  • Can you clear up this mystery for me?

I was trying to print out a form to do my taxes. The form was on my screen and I pressed print.

Instead of the form that was on the screen, the printer spewed out 4 pages of a Yahoo home page. The amazing thing is that the home page was dated November 2012. (I was doing this on 3/26/13).

My question is how was this home page stored in my computer? Why didn't the form that was on the screen print?

I admit I am not at all tech savvy, but hope that someone on here is, and can clear up this mystery for me. Are there things stored I don't know about?

Your answers would be much appreciated. Thanks for helping "an oldster" understand.

  • Do you have Dyscalculia? If so, how do you cope with it?

I have suffered with this all of my life. Only recently I learned there is an actual name for it.

Dyscalculia is the inability to comprehend or do mathematical problems. I've never been able to do number problems. Don't even like to see numbers - they are meaningless to me. Put a cryptogram in front of me, and I'll see the pattern in a short time and solve. But give me a Sudoku puzzle, and I'll stare at it for a long time and will never solve it.

Wikipedia has good info on this condition, if you type Dyscalculia in Search. It was just interesting to me that it had an actual name for the condition. I've always thought of it as Dyslexia - but with numbers.

Seniors, if you have this condition, how have you managed to deal with it?

  • What would you do if given the choice?

Somehow you are given the choice of going back to any time in history or your personal life, or you can go forward to any time in the future.

Knowing what you do now, would you opt to go back in time and, perhaps, fix things? Or would you be curious about what life would be like in, say, a 100 years from now?

I think I'd go back about 60 years. Would be wonderful to have my family back and just starting out. Hopefully I'd get it right this time The ways things are going, the future would be too scary.

    What say you?

  • How can you save things when iGoogle disappears in November 2013?

Every time I open my iGoogle Home Page and see the announcement that they are going to discontinue it in November, I get upset. I love my iGoogle page and everything on it, which I had carefully selected.

Managed to save a couple of things because they offered daily e-mail newsletters. However, can't figure out how to save permanently my cute little Adam Bowman Hamster. When I bring him up again, it still says Save to iGoogle. Any way to get this on, say, my Yahoo Home Page?

Anyone else upset about the cancellation of iGoogle? Have you figured out how you're going to save and keep your favorites? Your advice will be appreciated.

  • Why can't I use anything on my Yahoo Home Page?

I'm using Internet Explorer 8. The home page comes up, but when I click on any item, it won't open. Right now I am on Yahoo Answers by going through Google. Google Chrome works fine and I can pull up anything on my iGoogle home page.

Can't even use the search bar on Yahoo. This just started yesterday afternoon. Thought it might be IE8 not working, but I ran the test and it said no problem found. Yesterday Microsoft put in 14 important updates and Adobe also updated. Could that be the problem? McAfee just did a several hours scan but found no malware. Also ran an MRT scan - no malicious software. Could it be something in the updates?

I am not at all computer savvy and at a loss as to what happened to my Yahoo page and how to fix it. The thing is I click on my Yahoo page (through IE8), it comes right up, but I can no longer read anything on it. (I go to an article, a line appears under it, as usual, click on it, but nothing opens.)

Same thing with list of sites on left side of page - they won't open - nothing works on Yahoo page.

Sorry this is so long, but I've been working on it all day and have run out of ideas how to get Yahoo back to normal. I will appreciate any suggestions you have. (Obviously I'll have to go into Google to see if I got any answers.) So frustrated!

  • What do you see looking back at the Year 2012?

It's been a year of tragedies and triumphs. What stands out for the past year in your mind, either personally or nationally?

There have been ups and downs in my personal world (as in all years), but I'm still happy to wake up each morning to face another day. 12/21/12 came and went, but we're all still here. Maybe there's time to fix things.

May 2013 be your best year yet!

  • How can I write a letter & print it out on my computer?

I just want to write an occasional letter (or maybe send a recipe to someone). I don't want to buy a program for this as I won't use it much. My arthritis hinders me from writing things in longhand these days, but I can still 2-finger type on the comp.

Is there some FREE service that would allow me to type out something, attach my laptop to my printer (it's not a wireless printer) and send it off? E-mail doesn't help as the folks to whom I want to send things don't have computers. (Old fogies like me, but at least I try to keep current.)

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  • How do you freeze fresh yams (or sweet potatoes)?

I bought too many yams for Christmas dinner. I'd like to keep them for a meal at a later time - maybe a month or so.

I've never frozen potatoes. Usually when you freeze vegetables (like asparagus), you blanch them first; you don't put them in the freezer raw.

I was thinking about peeling the yams, cutting them into serving size pieces, and freezing them.

My question really is - should they be partially cooked first? Then finish cooking when used? Or can they go in raw? Which is the proper way to keep them for future use? Your help will be so appreciated.

  • Seniors - Do you understand why this is?

Joe Politician comes on TV with an ad. The ad says the most glowing and positive things about him and his record of service.

At the end of the ad, Joe Politician says, "I approve this message." I always think well, Duh, what would he say, "The preceding were lies, all lies?" Why do all the politicians say they approve of their own message?

Just taking a little break from the TV and news of the storm Sandy. Been watching since early this morning, and your nerves do get frayed after awhile and you have to step away. I'm not in an area that floods, but already two very large trees have come down in the park across the street. And the extreme winds they call for have not even started. Will only get worse. Hope all my fellow East Coasters are safe. God Bless. ♥

  • My Senior Citizen friends = can you get YA answers - that are not 4 days old (at least)?

My YA Ans has gone crazy. I no longer have the "Recommended" option, but that seems to be the only thing I can get. I go on "Open" and the questions are days and sometimes weeks old. Some are resolved. Not only on SCs, but every category I try. Are you having this problem? Are you getting the latest questions?

I am asking this, but I'm not sure that if someone answers my questions, I'll be even able to see the answers.
