  • Example of (relatively modern) medical discoveries found by religion?

    I'm trying to find a medical discovery similar to this:

    The ancient egyptians found channels (pathways) in the body that held organs etc. This lead up to the understanding of human anatomy.

    Is there any relatively modern medical discoveries found by religion like that?

    Relatively meaning 1800s to now?

  • Gastric Vein? Mesenteric Veins? -> Hepatic Portal Vein?

    In my biology notes, I have:

    Artery -> Arterioles

    -> Capillaries

    -> Venules -> Vein

    -> Hepatic Portal Vein

    My question is, if food is absorbed in the small intestines, for example, would the food travel directly to the hepatic portal vein or does it pass through the mesenteric vein then hepatic portal vein.

    I am just very confused since I have received a list of major veins from my professor and there were no veins for the stomach, small intestine, or large intestine.

    Someone please clarify!

  • Calculating deviation from mean in parts per thousand - Significant figures?

    The question is to calculate the deviation from a mean in parts per thousand. I am having troubles with how many sig figs would this be:

    [ | 0.1068 - 0.1055 | / .1068 ] x 1000

    im thinking it should be 4 sig figs since both the 0.1068 and 0.1055 are 4sigfigs.

    would the answer be 12.17 ppt?

  • Confirming Cations (qual analysis): XSO4 and XCl?

    I am in Gen Chem doing qualitative analysis for soluble salts.

    Green Salt: XCl2

    Blue Salt: XSO4

    I know my anions are correct. However, I am unsure about my cations.

    What can I add that will give a distinct color to confirm whether what cations I have?

    I have deduced that I may have the following cations for my anions:

    Green Cl: Ni, Cr, Cu, Fe

    Blue SO4: Fe, Cu, Co, Cr

    I have HCl, NaOH, NH3, BaCl2, H2S, HNO3, H2SO4, AgNO3, KOH, H2O, (NH4)2C2O4, DMG, H2OH that I can add to a solution of my salt dissolved in water.

    Thank you!

  • Can't stay awake at all.?

    I can sleep a total of eight hours and no matter where I am, I can't stay awake.

    I'll be driving to school and my eyes get really heavy. I try my best to keep them open they can't. I would have to pull over to the side and take a minute to regain awakeness...

    I can be taking a test, and fall asleep too.

    I've tried B complex vitamins and it doesn't work. I know it's water soluble and therefore excess comes out as urine. But, I'm starting to even doubt that ANY of it is being absorbed at all.

    I've also tried coffee (I know it's overrated) so, its not a big deal. But tea used to work for me and it works for a lot of people. especially with the extra thing in it that increases caffeine's effect. But, i can drink a lot and nothing can keep me awake.

    I need help.

    It's really starting to become a problem when I can't drive safely to school, can't take tests without passing out.. etc

    Could I have narcolepsy? or just a sleeping problem?

  • CuCl2 + NH3 and also CuSO4 + NH3?

    I have a green salt, CuCl2, in H2O. I added NH3 to this solution and it turned blue.

    Is it because there are Cu2+ cations?

    Likewise, I have a blue salt, CuSO4, with H2O. I added NH3 to this solution and it turned blue.

    Is it because there are Cu2+ cations?

    These two salts are from an unknown general cation+anion chemistry lab.

    I am sure I have Cl- and SO4 2- anions. I was trying to confirm my cations.

    Is adding NH3 correct confirm I had copper or is this totally wrong and I do not have copper as my cation?

  • Unknown green salt with anion Cl-. Finding Cation....(Gen Chem II Lab)?

    I am in Gen Chem II lab studying general unknown salts. My salt was green, like lime green?

    I went through the anion process and found Cl-.

    Afterwards, I dissolved some of the salt in H2O. I mixed this solution with NH3.

    The solution turned dark blue like aqueous Copper (II).

    Do I have CuCl2?

    I was told I might of done the process wrong because I did not remove my anion......

    and I was told I might of done the process wrong because I did not add HCl, Ta, NH3, centrifuge, decant, and etc... (a whole process of precipitating group II ions).

    However, I was with my lab professor and she said I should go ahead and use the new solution and just add NH3, but she's not the main lab professor.. so I just want to make sure I did this right.

    Thanks!

  • FAFSA, 401k, and EFC?

    Last year, we had issues with our FAFSA and after my college fixed things up, the question about retirement funds was listed as 0. I did not catch this last year because I assumed the college fixed it correctly.

    This year, adding my parent's retirement funds 401K, the estimated EFC jumped from 4,000 to 14,000.

    I am very confused as to whether I made a mistake, the college made a mistake, or the estimated EFC is just way off. My parent's combined income is 40,000.

    I'm very concerned about my grants right now, please give me advice.
