  • 2001 Dodge Dakota Sport runs rough at start up and sometimes engine dies. No DTC's?

I have a 2001 Dodge Dakota Sport with a 3.9L engine and automatic transmission. Engine has been recently replaced with a used engine (same size) out of a 2002 Dakota by certified Techs at a reputable shop. The guy who owned the truck before me never did any maintenance on it and ran the engine with a leaking head gasket until it burnt a hole through the top of a piston and he kept on running it that way until the engine was literally nothing but a big boat anchor. The replacement engine has about 30K miles less than the old engine. When they replaced the engine they put on a new water pump, O2 sensor, spark plugs, plug wires, distributor cap and rotor.

I have no present DTC's. When I start the engine, it runs at about 1000 rpm's briefly then idles down to about 600 to 700. As it idles down it seems to be running on 4 or 5 cylinders and idles really rough. If I try to put it in gear and drive away, it will stumble, cough, sputter, backfire and sometimes die. But if I turn off the engine instead of putting it in gear and then restart it immediately, it will idle down as before but will run much smoother with just a slight bit of rough idle. Then the engine runs fine as I'm driving the truck with the exception of the slight rough idle. The engine seems to have plenty of power and the truck will haul butt when you get on the gas. I just had the transmission rebuilt so I know it's working fine.

I just have that problem when I start it up. And it doesn't matter if it has been sitting overnight or if it's just been sitting for a half hour. Then I have to go through the same routine of starting it twice to get it to run. I could diagnose it myself but I don't have $7,000 to spend on a DRB III scan tool. That's rather cost prohibitive. Any of you Dodge pros got any ideas of what could be happening? I can't afford to keep taking it back to the shop every week. I call this truck "my money pit".

The truck has 118,000 miles on the odometer and the replacement engine has about 82,000 to 84,000 miles on it. I have used Chevron Techron in the last 2 tanks of gas thinking that it may be dirty or clogged fuel injectors. It didn't help. All of the gas in the tank is fresh.

  • Where can I find free driver downloads?

I have a Mitsumi CD-R/RW model CR-4809TE and an LG HL-DT-ST CD-R/RW model GCE-8320B that I need drivers for. Everywhere I look that says there are free drivers require you to jump through hoops, subscribe to stuff I don't want or purchase some sort of subscription. I don't view this as being "free". Are there any truly free places to get these drivers?

I even tried the manufacturer's web sites which are way too confusing to use to find what I want and I'm not sure if it's even available there.

  • How do I remove the windshield wiper switch?

I have a 1993 Chevrolet S-10 2.8L 5-speed with a bad windshield wiper switch. I subscribe to ALLDATADIY.com and have used the information obtained there to remove the steering wheel, steering column lock, turn signal cam, lock cylinder and everything needed to get access to the windshield wiper switch. The steering column has no tilt wheel.

I know that particular switch has a rod that goes from it, down the outside of the steering column to the headlight bright & dim switch, I have a new replacement switch already but I just can't see how to remove the old one. I did proper troubleshooting to determine that the switch is bad and not the module on the wiper motor.

Even the information on the ALLDATA site is pretty vague and doesn't really say how to remove the switch.

Does anybody know how to remove this switch or know where I can find useful information to get this job done? I've asked nearly everybody I can think of except a Chevrolet dealer but they wouldn't tell me anyway for obvious reasons. They're in the business of fixing cars, not giving out free information. This one really has me stumped.

Thanks in advance for any helpful information.

  • ASRock P4AL-800....no video during P.O.S.T./boot?

    ASRock P4AL-800 (Pentium 4 800fsb)

Bought the mobo as "new" old stock. (It's an older board but has never been used.) It came bare bones with no installation cd or any accessories of any kind. I installed a P4 3.0 ghz processor on it which was taken from a known working pc. Also installed a 3dforce mx4000 agp8x video card which is known to work ok. Installed a brand new stick of PC3200 (DDR400) 1Gb which was obtained from a reputable vendor that guarantees the memory to be compatible with the mobo. I am also using a known good 500w PSU. I'm using a fairly new LCD monitor and it's hooked up correctly. At this point, no other hardware is installed until I can get video and get into the BIOS. I switched on the power at the power supply then pushed the power button to start the pc. The fan started running in the power supply, and also the fan started running for the CPU but I have no video at all. I've tried re-seating the video card several times thinking that it may not be making good contact. Also did the same with the DIMM. Everything seems to be connected correctly and running...just NO video. I need some troubleshooting help for this problem. It's got me stumped. Help???

  • How do I keep frogs away from (and out of) my outdoor spa?

I hope I posted this question in the right catagory.

During the summer when it starts getting real dry, frogs seem to home in on the water vapor from my spa. When I open the cover, there will be several of the little critters sitting in there enjoying themselves. I remove them from the spa but others show up later to take their places. To begin with, it's kind of hard to keep the ph of the water regulated and keep it sanitized using bromine and the frogs aren't helping me any by being in there. Is there any product available that I could use that would repel the frogs and keep them away? I saw a program on TV once where a married couple who lived in Hawaii had a similar problem. They didn't have a spa but their property was being overrun by African frogs that were accidently introduced into the eco system there. They didn't like the frogs because they were extremely noisy at night. These people sprayed citric acid around their property which would keep the frogs away for a while but they kept having to respray all the time. What I'm afraid of is that one might die in there and cause me more water problems. Anybody got any suggestions of how to keep them away?

  • How do you retrieve files from a hard drive that has a corrupt boot sector and will not load the OS?

I had trouble installing new system memory and it caused the boot sector to either lose files or the files have become corrupt. I've corrected the memory problem, but now it simply won't load my OS (WinXP) and says that there are corrupt files. Unfortunately, I no longer have my WinXP installation disk (I lost it somewhere) so I can't use it to try to boot Windows or to try to repair it with the repair console utility. I have some files on the HD that I'd like to keep but I'm afraid that now there's no way to retrieve them. Is there any other way to get the old files?

  • Are my hard drives compatible with each other?

I have 2 Western Digital hard drives both of which are SATA. They have different capacities (36GB and 160GB) but they run at different speeds. The 36GB is the Raptor which runs at 10,000 rpm and the 160GB runs at 7,500 rpm. My primary HD is the 160GB. What I want to do is add the 36GB HD just to increase my storage capacity. Both drives are basically the same with the exception of their running speeds. Will they work together ok, or am I just asking for trouble?

    My PC is a custom built. ASUS P4C800E-Deluxe MoBo, 800fsb, socket 478, P4 3.0Ghz, 4Gb DDR400 (PC3200).

  • Where can I find penpals for my son?

My son is incarcerated in a Florida juvenile facility and asked me to find out if I could find him some pen pals. People who have originally written to him, over time, have stopped writing. He wants to get mail from people other than family. Although he didn't really specify to me, I think he would probably prefer female penpals. He is 24 years old and is due to be released in approximately 11 months from now. He is in a lonely place and a friendly letter from someone would give him something to do and help him pass the time. If there's anyone here who would like to write to him, contact me through this site and I will send you his name and address. I can also provide a picture of him if you want it. He's a nice looking guy (and I'm not saying that just because I'm his parent). All serious answers from you will be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you in advance.

  • How would I set up my old hard drive?

to retrieve info from it. It's out of an old system that doesn't work anymore. (Won't boot up.) but drive is still good. It was suggested that I might hook it up to the same flat cable that runs my dvd player on my new PC. Would that actually work? And if it would, will I have to set the jumpers differently? (Master/slave) I certainly don't want to fry my good PC. (Or crash it) Too much money invested there. My new PC is an ASUS P4C800E-deluxe mobo, Pent. 4, 3.0Ghz, 800fsb, Western Digital WD360GD Raptor HDD (sata), and 1Gb DDR SDRAM. The "old" hard drive is a Maxtor 541DX 5400rpm, 20Gb Ultra ATA/100. I'm trying to retrieve important info off of it. Not much $$ to work with. How can I do this as cheaply as possible? Same OS on both.

  • Can any computer guru's help me?

I have an older pc that I'm trying to get going again. About 4 years ago I found some "cheap" software that claimed that it could clean up unwanted stuff from my hard drive probably the way a registry cleaner might work. Well, being a somewhat novice on PC systems, I ended up deleting things I shouldn't have and corrupting files, etc. I was running windows XP on it at the time. Some of my boot files were missing or corrupted. So I made a boot disk with the files: boot.ini , NTLDR, and NTDETECT.COM to try to get it to boot. It's a no go. I tried an XP setup disk to try to get into the recovery console...Can't get in there either. I keep getting a message that says my acpi.sys file is corrupted. It won't boot with a disk and it won't boot into safe mode. It's an OLD pentium ll with 66mhz fsb, gigabit mobo and Maxtor 20 Gb HDD. Also 128mb sdram. It worked pretty good before I trashed it with that cheap software. I want to get it going just to play with. Any takers on this one?

I believe my wife used this mixture once a long time ago and it worked quite well but neither of us can remember the AMOUNTS of each ingredient used. Does anyone know?

  • ASUS P4C800E-Deluxe Motherboard---Can it be rebuilt?

I have a motherboard that has lightning damage. (Yeah, I know...I shouldn't have been using my PC during a storm) It's an ASUS P4C800E-Deluxe motherboard which is a quite popular motherboard and getting harder (and more expensive) to find. I've since replaced it with another but I'd like to get this one fixed and use it as a backup. Are there places that do this kind of repair, or is the MB just a paperweight now?

  • Can someone tell me why?

Why is it that the majority of the really dumb questions on here are asked by people that drive "rice burners & other imports" and the majority of the intelligent answers are answered by those who drive American domestic vehicles?

  • Are autograph authenticators the real deal?

After checking several well known autograph authentication sites online, I've determined that they can't PROVE authentication any more than I can. So why is it they can pull so much weight and make everyone think they can positively verify an autograph? Just visit ANY of the sites and you'll see the word "opinion" thrown around a lot. You're not buying their service to verify anything. All you're doing is buying their OPINION. After all, were they there when the item was signed? I have an electric guitar signed by Ozzy Osbourne and I was thinking of having it authenticated...but not now. I have proof of where and how I acquired it and that should be more authentication than any of those yo-yo's can provide.
