I studied English literature and music in college, then spent two years studying science in preparation for med school. Now I'm balking at the cost of med school and thinking being in debt is not for me... so I'm doing a year as an Americorps VISTA, helping low-income, mostly Spanish-speaking families navigate the high school admissions process in Philadelphia. I love classical music, literature, and science (esp. physics and chemistry). I'll probably be in those forums the most!

  • Can someone help me with this VLOOKUP function error?

I can't share this worksheet since it's private data, but I'm getting an error on a VLOOKUP formula and was hoping someone could help me!

This workbook is calculating interest on a thirty-year mortgage and has two sheets. The first sheet is called 'refi breakeven'. It has dates listed in column B (set to the date format, every day of the mortgage is listed). Column H has the interest paid being summed up day by day.

Since there are a lot of cells, on the second sheet, I'm trying to pull the value from column H ('total interest') that corresponds to the date 12/31/14, which is listed in column B. This is the formula I wrote:

    =VLOOKUP(12/31/14,'refi breakeven'!B13:'refi breakeven'!H12000, 7, FALSE)

    I tried this too:

    =VLOOKUP(12/31/14,'refi breakeven'!B13:H12000, 7, FALSE)

I am getting a !N/A error message. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong? I'm fairly new to Excel functions ;)

    Thanks!

  • Why are my letters spaced out in Microsoft Publisher?

In a Publisher box, the text in several of my lines (all before a hyperlink) is getting widely spaced out. I have already looked at kerning and tracking, but setting it to normal (or honestly making any changes at all under "character spacing") doesn't have any effect on the spaced-out lines.

What else can cause this, and how can I fix it so that the space between all the letters is consistent?

    Thanks!

  • Which numbers on this statement do I use to calculate cost basis?

    Hi everyone,

I am trying to calculate cost basis on a mutual fund purchased in 1990, and sold in full on December 2013. All capital gains and dividends were reinvested from the very beginning, and nothing was ever sold until December.

I am trying to calculate my cost basis and have all my statements. I have a couple questions:

    1) Most people say to do it by calculating the number of shares purchased by the price per share at the time; then you are supposed to add these up and add it to your original purchase price. That would mean I would have to do it for every separate transaction over 24 years.

However, my tax statements also list the dividends and capital gains each year (which are the numbers I will already have paid taxes on). Can I just use those numbers instead?

    2) If so, my statements have three numbers for dividends: "Income dividends paid this year," "Ordinary dividends," and "gross dividends and other distributions of stock." Which of these numbers would I use?

    Thanks!

  • My boyfriend lost his job?

My boyfriend had worked at another agency solidly for three years, and just switched jobs. His new supervisor was a nightmare- she had no supervisory experience, micromanaged and wouldn't even let him make calls unless she was in the room. When he would ask direct questions for her feedback, she would just write the emails herself and make calls herself instead of giving him guidance.

She had never even done the job herself (she was a clinician who did little administrative work), and his coworkers and the person previously in the position gave him great feedback. His coworkers also dropped hints about her having a grudge against men, though of course we can't prove it's discrimination.

After six weeks she fired him. She refused to give him any details, just saying "communication." It's doubtful the company even knows how bad she was, as she doesn't supervise anyone else. Since it was a probation period, he does not qualify for unemployment from this job. Now he is unemployed and only has $1200 in his account.

Is there anything he can do to appeal this without it being inappropriate? What do you recommend?

    Thanks!

  • Allstate office lost a copy of my birth certificate- what can I do?

I needed it translated into French, and from the start the man running the office wasn't getting it done and also wasn't calling me as promised. After two months I called yet again, when he told me to go somewhere else because his translator had left. I asked for the copy to be given back to me, but he said that thet had "lost" my birth certificate. I told him bluntly that it was a vital document and I needed it returned, and he said they would look and call me back. Of course I haven't heard anything.

I have given up hope on him doing anything, though I did email the national offices and ask if they could put any pressure on him to look harder. I'm not sure what else I can do.

This was luckily a photocopy, not a certified copy. No one should be able to use the document itself. However, it still has my personal information on it, and I am not happy with the idea of it floating around somewhere.

How concerned should I be, and what can I do?

    Thanks!

  • What are the advantages of treasury bonds over savings bonds? What about TIPS?

I know that savings bonds are for individuals, they are sold in smaller denominations, and you cannot sell them to someone else. I know that most other bonds can be transferred to others, but they are usually much more expensive and most individuals can't reasonably invest in them except by using a bond mutual fund.

I'm not sure why this would be worth it. Is there a higher return if you invest in those other kinds of bonds, rather than savings bonds?

Also, I know that TIPS are supposed to be extremely safe, and the only drawback I've read is that you should keep them in tax-deferred accounts. Are there other drawbacks? For instance, is the return lower than for other bonds?

    Thanks!

  • Applied for an job with an incomplete description- should I contact the hiring manager with more information?

I applied for a job last week. I found the position listed on a semi-private forum, and I tailored it to match. Now, though, I just found the same job listed on Idealist. While it's clearly the same job, with the same title, this job description is more detailed and the contact person is different.

Because I didn't see the listing that was just posted widely, I didn't know that there was a large emphasis on field trips and college admissions in the job. I am very experienced with these topics, and I'm concerned that my original resume and cover letter won't be reflecting my full strengths.

Is it reasonable to send them a second email? For instance, I could write, "I forwarded my resume and cover letter to _____ last week, but I just found a somewhat different description for this position on Idealist. I am writing to emphasize that I also have a strong background in college admissions and would be eager to guide students through the admissions process." (Or something like that).

Is this reasonable, or will it just look like I'm applying for the same job twice? Should I just stick with my original submission and wait?

    Thanks!

  • How do I reorder the videos in a Youtube playlist?

I checked their help section, and it says that you can click and drag the videos into the order you want. I've tried clicking on both the thumbnails and the titles, but the click and drag doesn't seem to work. Is there another way to do this?

And I did do an internet search, but the answers were all referring to how it was done a couple years ago (typing in the numbers, which no longer seems to be an option). Now there is just a box to check, but the only option seems to be to move them to the top or bottom of the playlist, not to rearrange them.

    Thanks!

  • What are some grittier or clublike latin songs, or club songs that can be danced to latin dances?

I'm used to the more traditional songs for latin dances, so now I'm looking for songs that have a feel of a more traditional club. (Something more fusion or gritty, rather than songs full of brass bands.) Club songs that happen to be danceable to salsa, cha cha, merengue, or bachata would be great too.

Here's a good example of what I'm looking for: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vRBgZ4aMPio&list=PL...

  • Are there any mythological (or Bible) characters you can think of that meet the following descriptions?

I am writing a poem and need some help. The character only needs to fit one of the three criteria. Thanks!

    1) Someone who is so afraid he/she cannot act, esp. someone who hides him/herself away from the world

    2) Someone who rises back from the dead or survives a near-death experience (besides Lazarus and Jesus)

    3) Someone who is suicidal or attempts suicide

  • Are there any Bible (or mythological, but preferably Bible) characters who meet the following descriptions?

I am writing a poem but know little about the Bible. (That will hopefully change as I study it this summer!) I need a character who meets one of the following descriptions:

    1) Someone who is so afraid he/she cannot act, esp. someone who hides him/herself away from the world

    2) Someone who rises back from the dead or survives a near-death experience (besides Lazarus)

    3) Someone who is suicidal or attempts suicide

    Thank you!

It was worn by Ingrid Bergman in Notorious.

  • If you could create a "music video" for your favorite pieces, how would you do it?

First of all, I would like to apologize to those who answered my last two questions- something came up, and I was not available to choose a best answer for those questions when the time came. I still really appreciate the effort.

Putting classical music to images has happened before, and it need not be related to the content of the piece. Think of Stravinsky being played to dinosaurs in Fantasia, or the gorgeous Arabian dance with the goldfish, or the cute mushrooms in the Chinese dance. So with that level of freedom, how you would make a music video for your favorite pieces?

  • If you could combine several works/melodies into a polyphonic piece, what would they be?

Unless you're exceptionally good at imagining music in your head (or feel like putting in the time at the piano), you probably won't know what this will sound like. So I mean this question as more of a fun way to combine the ideas of pieces. (Of course, you're free to do whatever you want) ;) This would work especially well with opera- I wish I knew it better!

For instance, I might combine "The Elephant" from Saint-Saens' Carnival of the Animals with the music from the scenes in Figaro where both the Count and Cherubino are trying to hide. Somehow, the thought of the count as an elephant trying to hide made me smile :)

  • Classical music poetry: I've written some limericks, how about you?

A limerick, as a refresher, has two lines that rhyme (usually with seven to ten syllables), two lines that rhyme differently and are shorter, and a final line that rhymes with the first two. They're usually funny. For instance:

There once was a lady of Niger

Who smiled as she rode on a tiger

    They returned from the ride

    With the lady inside

And the smile on the face of the tiger.

Who is feeling creative? :) With a little thought, these aren't that hard (choosing easily rhyming words helps, and close rhymes count). Or you can take one off the internet, as long as you say it isn't yours. Here are mine:

The German sixth said to Italian

I know you're no dominant seven

    But no need to moan

    You're missing a tone

But German said, you were in Beethoven.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Augmented_sixth_chord...

In the midst of a concert by Liszt

Came from the crowd a great hiss

    They turned all around

    To hear the harsh sound

Of Brahms snoring, completely in bliss.

  • What are your favorite musical insults?

Composers, like any of us, don't always get along. So... what are some of the best examples? Stories will work (we all know about Wagner and his gloves), but preferentially these will be true musical insults.

    Thanks!

  • "The Philosopher's Soccer Game"- can you think of an equivalent for classical music?

In a famous Monty Python skit, there is a "Philosopher's Soccer Game" in which they basically all wander around for the length of the game, thinking... until someone (hint) has a Eureka moment. It is very funny.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ur5fGSBsfq8

It got me thinking- what would a game with the composers look like, or opera characters? It can be any sport or game whatsoever, from sports to chess to board games... I know this may be hard, but I hoped someone could get their creative juices flowing. Those of you who know opera well could probably put me to shame at this.

I'll get things started. I envision an epic game of Axis and Allies, the WWII board game. (Feel free to use it too). The Japanese, with their traditional music, and Wagner (equipped with a ring to rule the world, the Valkyries, and most of the great composers) unleash a classical music war on the world. Despite a strong force of composers, the French capitulate quickly (led by Saint-Saens, who leaves the performance in a huff). Elgar is left defending England with only Purcell and a handful of other composers at his side, but Britten's knowledge of war helps the English stay afloat. Meanwhile, Shostakovich bravely defends the Russian legacy, despite the onslaught of the Germans and a repressive dictator who silences many of his compatriots. Finally, however, Copland and his "commando unit" take the world by storm, destroy the ring and reestablish balance in the world of classical music.

  • What are some pieces you've always thought would translate beautifully into dance or related art forms?

I specifically had in mind things besides our traditional ballets. (Those are obviously already in the crossover between dance and classical music.) Are there any pieces of music that you think would be wonderful set to dance, or any dancing/skating/related performances set to classical music that have impressed you?

When I listen to the beginning of the orchestral version of Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody #2, I always envision a full ballet sequence in my head for the first five or six minutes. And in some cases I love classical music being used in figure skating. (I just hate how it gets cut off all the time- a necessity for the sport, which is rarer in ice dancing- and they often use poor recordings).

Here are two skating renditions I liked:

  • A competition: want to write some fun classical music letters?

There is a site, dearblankpleaseblank.com, where you have to write funny comments in a specific format, as follows:

    Dear ____, please ____. Sincerely ____

    For instance:

Dear People of the World, I don't mean to sound slutty, but please use me whenever you want. Sincerely, Grammar.

Dear Mary, Just admit you slept with someone else. This is getting out of hand. Sincerely, Joseph

Dear Rubik's Cube, Done! Sincerely, Colorblind

You get the idea. I thought it might be fun if we did specific classical music ones. Whoever gets the most thumbs up wins best answer! No cheating. Here is mine (not part of the competition):

Dear Newcomers to the Yahoo Answers Classical section,

For the last time, I didn't do it.

    Sincerely, Salieri
