  • Why do the phasers in the original Star disintegrate everything but not in later series?

In the original series, whenever someone used a phaser to kill someone, they ended up disintegrating them but in the newer series, whoever uses it, the phaser just kills the person but they're still there. Against the Borg, for example, I imagine in the original series they would be vaporized but they shoot sparks when shot by the phasers in the Next Generation.

  • How long are Christian Sunday sermons?

I know its a broad question considering the number of denominations and such but I was curious b/c I hear of services going on for several hours at a time.

  • How would spacecraft protect against electromagnetic radiation?

I know that polyethylene and water can be used to shield against solar particle events and GCR but would that do the job for electromagnetic radiation such as gamma and X-rays that come from the sun?

A lot of articles talk about the first 2 as the most serious threat but not much mention is made about electromagnetic radiation. Is it not much of a threat? I would think they would be but please correct me on anything I've said if its wrong.

    Thanks.

  • Can Polycarbonate be used for spacecraft windows?

Excuse my ignorance if they already have; if they have, can someone give me some examples of their use?

If they haven't, would they work and if not, what is the disadvantage? Also, why have they not been used?

    Thanks.

  • How thick are the international space station windows?

Not the cupola, I've already come across a million articles on that and I'm tired of it so I came here in hopes someone would know about the other porthole windows.

    Thanks.

  • What requirements are there for spacecraft windows?

I'm doing a school project which involves designing an inflatable habitat for interplanetary space travel and I want to put windows on it. However, I'm not sure what requirements it needs to meet or what dimensions would good and so forth. I found a report by NASA on windows for the Apollo mission as the first search result for "spacecraft windows" but it doesn't deal with inflatable habitats and I don't know how differently that would affect it. Anyone know any good links to look up or knowledge to share on the subject? I would appreciate it.

  • how do you get the thickness of a material from its area density?

I'm designing a wall for a hypothetical spacecraft and I need to know the thickness of the materials. From area density, it's easy to get the weight of the material b/c you just multiply it by the area. However, I am not sure how to get the thickness and I'm at a loss.

  • How can I use the mass attenuation coefficient to find the amount of radiation dosage reduction?

I'm designing a hypothetical space habitat and I need to know how much radiation can be deflected by the materials used in the wall. However, I'm new to understanding attenuation so I don't know what equations, variables, constants, etc. are involved and what I'd make of them.

I was told that the mass attenuation coefficient is important and looking it up, it seems it helps understand how much energy is reduced of the energetic particles. However, I'm not sure how to find out how much radiation in rads is reduced.

    Any help would be appreciated.

  • What can 60 cubic meters be compared to?

I'm doing a school project involving using a space around that size but I can't get a proper understanding of how big that is. Is there any real life thing that can be compared with to get an understanding of whether that's big or not? Thanks.

  • Does anyone know where I can find volumes 5-7 of the manga Guyver?

I've been to many sites but they seem to only have volumes 1-4 and then everything after 8 but nothing in between. If they have a link, it is broken or it has nothing on the page its linked to except ads.

Volumes 5-7 are also known as chapters 23-46 if that helps.

  • Is there a story in the bible where Jesus is thrown by some animal and it is cursed?

A Christian friend told me about an account where Jesus is riding an animal, I think a mule, and is thrown by it so he curses it by making it infertile and then he rides a donkey and it doesn't throw him. I heard it a long time ago so I might be getting the details confused; it might have been a donkey that threw him and he made it infertile and that is where mules come from. Is this story from anywhere? If so, can someone give where it comes from? Thanks.

  • Cardiovascular and Strength exercises on the same day or separated?

If I want to increase my muscle size and endurance but also improve my cardiovascular system, should I separate exercises for strength and cardiovascular on different days or should I run and bike everyday and do strength exercises only every other day?

  • If Muhammad (saw) allowed the execution of 400-900 men of Banu Qurayza, then where is it?

Where is this mass grave of bodies? Has anyone ever unearthed it or is it marked w/ some sign that people are buried there? Other places such as Uhud and Badr, the bodies of Muslim and non-Muslims alike are marked as to where they are buried if I'm not mistaken.

I ask b/c critics of Muhammad (saw) might say what happened was clear and simple aside from it being a horrible thing but I'm not so sure.

  • Were Christians pilgrims really being massacred or was it something to stir the emotions of Crusaders?

I was watching the History Channel special "The Crusades: The Crescent and the Cross" and also I read up on wiki that the reason the Crusades came to the mind of Pope Urban II was that the Byzantine Emperor sent a plea for help to push back the Seljuks and so it came to the Pope that they could wage a war on the Muslims in general to take the Holy Land and increase the political power of the church.

In the documentary but not so directly in the wiki, it says that Urban gave a speech detailing exaggerated atrocities against Christian pilgrims and that God has said that the Infidels should be punished and what not but there was no mention of helping the Byzantine Empire in his speech.

So essentially, my question is were there really mass atrocities against Christian pilgrims by the Seljuks that have been stated in real life Christian accounts of those who traveled there and I mean on the scale of thousands, not just a few people attacked here and there, or was it something that the Pope came up with to rally the masses b/c helping the Byzantines, who were not much closer to the Church b/c they had separated years ago, wasn't much of a reason to do a Crusade for most people?

    Please be respectful.

  • Why is Anarkali's story such a mystery?

They could easily excavate the site she is allegedly buried under or use something that can see under ground; her burial was never proper to begin with so I don't see what it would hurt to do so.

  • People keep claiming Obama is Muslim but wouldn't it be more correct to say he's Jewish?

It comes from the mother's side apparently and his mother was Jewish if I recall correctly. His father was Muslim but he wasn't raised Muslim which is the important thing in being Muslim.

  • Why do people who call Muhammad (saw) a pedophile not call Joseph who married Mary a pedophile?

Like Muhammad (saw) and Aisha (ra), Joseph too married Mary when she was at a very young age and he too had a large age gap with Mary.
