Why do they use the Donkey and Elephant to represent the parties in government and why do they call it a Bull or Bear with the stock market? Who thought this stuff up anyway and what prompted them to use those particular animals?

Half the rent, half the utilities, groceries together or separate, personal needs separate, own room--furnished or unfurnished, house priveleges, no smoking in the house. I see a lot of different symbols next to peoples names and in their answers. Wher can I get a list of how to make those symbols? You know, like the heart, star, music note, etc?
