  • Is it worth claiming on my home insurance and if so what will I receive in replacement?

I’ve recently cracked my TV badly by knocking it over, it looks un-repairable and considering claiming on the home insurance. I am aware the premium will go up if I claim but cannot find in the policy cover how the claim will likely be treated. The TV is a 49” LG TV and was purchased around 4 years ago for £550 from Argos.

What I can find is that our RAC Home Insurance cover is...

    a) New For Old, not indemnity cover.

    b) Covered against accidental damage.

and I theorise that the outcome will be one of these...

    1. TV is replaced with a similar size and brand, regardless of price, which as TV’s have gone down in price would be around £400 now to the insurance company,

    2. £550 is handed over in cash.

    3. £550 is given out in Argos Vouchers.

    4. A TV is purchased by the insurance company, for the price of £550.

    Many Thanks

  • Why are timing belt replacement intervals so different?

I was advised by Volkswagen to have my timing belt replaced at the 5 year / 40,000 miles interval, but my wife who has a Ford Focus was told by Ford it wasn’t needed until at least 10 years / 100,000 miles. The cars in questions were. Looking online, most VWs have 5 year intervals and Fords 10 year intervals. Would my VW have lasted comfortably to the 10 year mark? Why are these so different? I can’t imagine VW use less quality parts than Ford. In fact quite the opposite I could assume.

    Thanks

  • I recently received an AncestryDNA test that was wildly inaccurate, what do I have to stand on?

I recently received an AncestryDNA test that stated that I was 100% descended from an area of the U.K. through and through Yorkshire and Lincolnshire.

My father, is French, with Spanish and Italian roots and no British roots whatsoever and my mother is from Leeds, but has incredibly strong Germanic roots which make her more Germanic that English which have been found through historical records and has had a 23andme test which confirms at least 70% Germanic. I am the spitting image of my father (Mediterranean, olive skin, black hair, brown eyes.... I do not look British whatsoever) I understand that these tests can vary greatly but to be told 100% English, in particular specifically Yorkshire through and through, is insane as it’s quite obvious that I am not.... 90% English I would’ve had to convince myself to believe.... but to be 100% my parents tests would be very similar.

None of my 22,000 matches, match any surnames in my family, neither do any of their family trees match anyone from my family tree of 500ish people.

AncestryDNA have tried to tell me that through thousands of years, both halves of my family are originally from Yorkshire, but this could not possibly be true and both my mother’s and her brother’s tests are similar to each other and wildly dispute my test.

I’m not adopted, I could not look more like my father.

I honestly don’t believe that these can be my results.

What ground do I have to stand on here?

  • Can a car be taxed in a different name to the name on the V5C logbook.?

I recently bought a car for my fiancée as a surprise and when filling in the V5C I filled everything in in my own name as I couldn’t obviously get her to do it being a surprise, so as to transfer responsibility to taxing the car and being the registered keeper to myself.

I’ve since insured the car under her name, telling the insurance company that I am the registered keeper, but when coming to tax the car, I’ve taxed it under her name. Will this cause a problem when the DVLA find out that the car is taxed under a different name to the logbook?

Can I be paid minimum wage if my contract stated otherwise?

I have recently taken on a new job in a restaurant. In the interview the manager stated that the pay was minimum wage, which for my age range is £7.70 per hour, but when I received my employment contract, this was stated differently. I believe a mistake has been made as the amount quoted is for the age range above mine of £8.21ph. I have attached a photo to show how this was stated, but after receiving my first pay check, I have been paid £7.70ph. Am I able to query this as I did sign this specific contract.

    Many Thanks

  • Can I place a bet of say, £10,000 on a almost guaranteed outcome, and rake in a tidy profit? Say something of odds 1.02/1.?

If I was to place a bet of £10,000 on an in game football game, whereby one team was playing another team, who they were thrashing at least 5-0 with merely a few minutes to go, which, being usually around a 1.02/1 payout, would pay out a neat £200, would there be measures in place to stop me from either placing this bet, or cashing out all my money?

  • Can I insure my partner on my car without losing my no claims in a crash.?

My partner has started learning to drive and she has asked to be insured on my car to learn between lessons. If I add her as a named driver and a claim needs to be made, I am aware that I will lose my 6 year no claims discount. Is there any way that I can insure her without losing my no claims in a crash?

  • Is tracing service history reasonable cause to ask DVLA for previous owner details.?

I have recently bought a Used Volkswagen Golf from Inchcape Volkswagen and have already lost the service book in our recent move. As we have moved, the V5 no longer states the previous owners details but i do remember that it had a few service stamps from mechanics throughout Wolverhampton but I cannot remember where specifically. It has not been serviced with Volkswagen themselves as I have checked, but I have purchased a duplicate service book and would like to fill in the service history again. Is it reasonable cause to the DVLA if I request previous owner details to ask which garage it may have been serviced at or will they just turn me down? Thanks.

  • How much to charge for babysitting?

My partner is starting to do some babysitting for a few parents of the children at the nursery that she used to work at. Does hourly rate depend on qualifications / number of children etc. ? So just some details..

We live in York, she’s fully CRB checked and has a level 3 qualification in child care. She used to look after their children at the nursery so she’s very trusted with them if that makes a difference. She’s 25 years old and looking after 2 children aged 5 and 8 from 7pm until around 11pm. Any ideas on how much to charge?

    Thank You

  • How easily can a fractured bone displace?

I recently fractured my ankle. It’s a simple, closed stable avulsion fracture of the lower fibula and not near any joints. I can weight bear but have been put in a walker boot for 6 weeks whilst it heals. There’s very slight movement in the boot but not a lot and have been sleeping with it on at night. I can do exercises and take the boot off if I’m lying down. How easy would it be to displace with the boot on and would there be any signs at all if I had displaced the fracture since the x-ray on Wednesday? Would I have been able to feel it? Excess bruising? More inflammation? Is there any way I could tell before my first check up this coming Wednesday when they could x-ray it again. I can’t find an answer online and don’t want to bother the A&E again just for a simple question. Thanks.
