  • Thinking about getting my fourth grader Lord of the Flies for her birthday?

I know that it is a more advanced book for high schoolers (I haven't read it myself) but I read the back cover and it seems like something she would like, she is a very advanced reader for her age. Is it a good idea? She really liked the Harry Potter series and Lord of the Rings, as well.

  • Ideas for my physics project?

In my 12th grade, Honors physics class, we're supposed to build some type of physics demonstration for our final grade. According to the requirements, it has to be a machine type of thing (such that it can be used over and over again without requiring any set-up.) Does anyone have any good ideas? I'm really pressed for time so it'd be best if it didn't take too long to make. It also has to demonstrate some sort of physics principle (obviously.)

  • Waitlisted by my safety school?

I recently got into George Washington Univeristy and Northeastern University (both which were kind of targets/safetys) and got an 80k and 40k scholarship with each, respectively...I also got into UMASS (major safety, obviously, but I got into the honors program and have a full ride scholarship.) And today I got a letter saying I was waitlisted by American University....they wanted me to go to this website to accept a place on the waitlist and fill out a form saying why I want to go there. American University was the least rigorous school I applied to besides UMASS...this might be presumptuous of me but is it possible that AU waitlisted me because I was overqualified and they didn't think I was going to attend (they KNEW it was my safety school?) My SATs and GPA were all way above AUs average...but at the same time, I also got into UMASS....I probably would rather go to GW or Northeastern over AU, but I still haven't heard back from any of the schools I REALLY want to go to (Wesleyan, Johns Hopkins) so this has got me kind of worried....it would make me feel better to know I got waitlisted because I was overqualified, instead of there being something they really hated about me.... :/

So, for anyone who is knowledgeable about this kind of stuff, is it possible that I was waitlisted because I was overqualified for the school? Or perhaps there was just some strange reason they didn't accept me? (I looked over my AU supplements and there didn't seem to be anything wrong with them...haha....)

  • Which colleges should I apply to?

I'm a senior in high school, and my guidance counselor hasn't been very helpful (whenever I suggest a college, he tells me it's a "great choice!" without any advice on whether or not I could actually get in.) My parents aren't great with this kind of stuff, so I decided to ask other people's opinions :)

    SAT:

    Writing 760

    Reading 730

    Math 690

    Total: 2180

    ACT

    Reading 36

    Writing 34

    Science 31

    Math 25

    Total 32

GPA: 3.5 (bad grades freshman year.) I'm taking 5 AP classes this year, however. The rest have been honors classes. My school doesn't weight GPAs.

I am really not sure where I want to apply, but if anyone has a general idea of what types of schools I could get into, that would be great...? Also: I got a scholarship from taking the MCAs that told me I could go to UMASS for free. This would be great, because cost is a pretty big problem for me. Would I get into UMASS? I've heard it's getting harder and harder to get into, because more and more people want to go there.

Thank you for anyone who helps!! :)

  • Help with vectors (using force tables)?

Alright, so I'm doing a lab and cannot figure out this one part.

On a force table, I've got three vectors: Vector A is at an angle of 0 degrees, and has a force of .6 N. Vector B is at an angle of 90 degrees, and has a force of .8 N. Vector C has a force of 1.0 N (in the opposite direction.) What angle does Vector C need to be at in order to balance A and B (aka, be at equilibrium)?

I'm assuming it has something to do with the formulas y=rsin(theta), x=rcos(theta) and r=sqrt of (x squared + y squared.) But I might be wrong.

Any help would be VERY much appreciated!! I am confused out of my mind.

    Thank you!

  • My Adderall is making me throw up, please help?

So, I recently started taking Adderall in the morning because i was diagnosed with ADD. It has helped my schoolwork a lot, but the only problem is that I usually like to wake up at 6 in the morning and go running...but when I'm on Adderall it always make me nauseus, and half the time I throw up. I take Adderall around seven; so right after I go running; but for some reason, the Adderall from the previous day is still affecting me or something and always makes me puke :( Running is really important to me because it helps me focus almost as much as the Adderall. I thought it would go away but it's been three months, and it's still happening. I'm really getting tired of throwing up, and I've lost 20 pounds (I went from 135 to 115; so I'm not dangerously underweight or anything now, but I wasn't trying to lose weight....) Is there anything I can do to make myself feel less nauseous? Or do I have to stop doing one of these activities? Any help would be much appreciated :)

  • Is 32 a good ACT score?

  • Is this a good ACT score? Or is my SAT better?

    My SAT score is 2180.

    Writing: 760

    Reading:730

    Math:690

    ACT score is 32.

    English: 36

    Math:25

    Reading: 34

    Science: 31

Yeah i know my math scores are suckish, I have ADD and can't do the questions fast enough, so I always run out of time. But anyways, are these decent scores? Which one is better/which one should i send 2 colleges?

    Thanks! :-)

  • Seeking advice on standardized testing and colleges...are my scores good enough?

I got the following scores for my SATs:

    Overall: 2180

    Writing:760

    Reading:730

    Math:690

    ACT:

    Overall: 32

    English: 36

    Math: 25

    Reading: 34

    Science: 31

Also, I took the SAT subject tests and got:

    History: 720

    English: 730

    Spanish: 690

(I plan on taking Spanish and English again to try and make them better in the fall. I'm not taking history again because I took it in 9th grade and now have forgotten everything...haha.)

So are my ACT or SAT scores better? And, since I have heard that some colleges accept ACTs instead of subject tests, which is better; my ACT scores or my subject test scores? Should I retake the ACTs? I would like to get into colleges such as American University, George Washington, Colgate, Weslyan, or possibly Berkely (although I realize this would probably be a reach.) Are these scores on par with those colleges? I have a 4.1 (weighted!) GPA and I do several extracurricular activities, although not too many. I do community service but I do not have a job (not for a lack of trying.) Which of these colleges could I reasonably expect to get into? What should I do to better my chances?

My guidance counselor keeps telling me to speak about it with my parents, and my parents keep telling me to talk about it with my guidance counselor. I would really appreciate some help!!

Thank you very very much for any advice!!! :-)

  • Is the SAT a good indicator of IQ?

My guidance counselor, school principal, and a bunch of other people told me that the SAT test is basically just a different form of an IQ test, and that there was a way to get a pretty good idea of your IQ based on your SAT score.

So, I went on the internet and put in my SAT score and it told me I had an IQ of 145 -_-. This is definitely too high because I am far from a genius. I would guess my IQ is probably 115, or 120 at the highest (although I've never actually taken an IQ test before.) I guess they probably did it based off of percentiles (ie, the top 2% of people have an IQ of 140 or above, so people who score in the top 2% have an IQ of about 140.) This would make sense; if the SAT were a valid intelligence test. However, I am coming to think that the aforementioned people are incorrect, and it is not an IQ test. Based off of the questions, I think that it is dependent on a plethora of other factors; for example, your high school education, how well you do under timed pressured conditions, your vocabulary, what level of mathematics you've taken, how much you read etc.

So, what do you think? In what ways is the SAT a valid measure of general intelligence, and in what way is it not? (On another front; to what extent are IQ tests a valid measure of intelligence? I guess this is debatable is as well.)

Any insight to be offered on this topic would be greatly appreciated. Peace :)

  • Is my mom in the wrong, or is it me? What should I do differently?

Lately, my mom has been acting really mean to me. She was recently diagnosed with depression, and so I've tried to be kind/ understanding to her; but I think that the nicer I am, she thinks I'm patronizing her, and it makes her madder. I always make dinner for her, and am driving my brother everywhere (I'm 17), and have been staying home more often than usual (like I was gonna hang out with my boyfriend on friday but she was crying in her room so I stayed home instead and watched a movie with her.) She was really nice while we were watching the movie, but then like an hour afterwards she told me that I needed to get some of my own friends and stop bothering her all the time. I was really hurt by this, so I got kind of angry and told her that I was tired of being around her when she was always so cynical and mean to me. So then I took my car and drove over to my boyfriends and spent the night there. She kept calling me but I was so mad that I ignored her. In the morning, I drove home and she wouldn't talk to me. I kept bugging her and trying to apologize that she eventually got really, really angry and pushed me into our slider door and started throwing things at me and said that I was selfish and only cared about myself. Then she started crying and said that she should have never had kids, because she was a failure. Then she went into her room. This was earlier today and she still won't talk to me and I feel terrible about everything. I know I messed up but I'm just having such a hard time getting along with her and I don't know what to do.

Any advice would be really appreciated...thank you :)

  • How are the ACTs different from the SATs?

I took the SATs w/out studying and got a 2180. I was planning on just taking the ACTs but people keep telling me they're different. I just kind of expected my SAT scores to correspond directly to the ACT ones, but now I'm not so sure. I'm taking them on June 9th, should (can I) study for them and if so, what's the best way to study?

PS: My weakest subject is math. I got a 690 on the SAT math, as opposed to 730 and 760 on reading and writing.

  • I think I have OCD?........?

So, I've always been a little bit "obsessive" but now I think I'm really developing OCD. I'm 17, and I've heard that girls are supposed to develop it when they hit 20 or 21...so I feel like it's just going to get worse from here. I don't want to tell anyone about it, because my mom already makes fun of me for being "OCD" enough as it is, and I don't want to prove her right. If people could tell me whether or not I have OCD, and if so, how to fix it, that'd be great :)

Ok, so here's what I do:

    Wake up at 5:03 (5+3 = 8, 8 is a power of 2.)

    Get out of bed at 5:29 (5+2+9 = 16, 16 is a power of 2.)

Get dressed, run 4 miles. Leave at 5:47.

    Back around 6:45.

Shower for 8 mins, get dressed, leave for school at 7:36.

(At school, schedule's pretty normal. No control. Go home, some days stay after school for certain things.)

10:07 lay out clothes for bed, brush teeth, get ready for bed. Room has to be spotless before I go to sleep. Backpack in corner, eight pencils, alarm clock set to 5:03. Go to bed at 10:52.

I have other things that I have to do during the day...for example, I practice my flute for 62 minutes. Running every morning. I haven't missed a day since November when I flew to California. I drink 4 cans of diet coke a day.

In case you haven't noticed, everything has to be a power of 2. When I was little, I thought that powers of 2 were the only "good" numbers and that by doing things in that number I was "keeping monsters away." Now I'm older, I know it's ridiculous, but I can't stop counting to powers of 2. I flick lightswitches or close doors 2 or 4 or 8 times. I always count to 8 in my head. If I mess up a word or phrase, I'll make it so I've said it 4 times; for example, I'll be talking, and I'll say, "Well, I think that we'll have got to...I mean, got to, got to, got to go tomorrow." I don't know why. I can't stop. There's so many other things, too. But this has gotten really long. I don't want to tell anyone, because I'm afraid people will think I'm weird. How do I cure myself without telling anyone, especially my parents?

    Thanks.......

I scored 2180. I know there's a ton of other factors but which colleges have this as like an average for their SAT scores...? I have a weighted GPA of 3.9 or 4.1 or something. My unweighted gpa is like 3.6.

  • Should I re-take the SATs?

Alright, so, I've already taken them twice, but I didn't study for them either time.

    1rst try:

    Crit. Reading: 730

Writing: 660 (8 on essay, 58 mult. choice correct)

    Math: 600

    Overall: 1990

    2nd try:

    Critical reading: 730

Writing: 760 (11 on essay, 71 mult. choice questions right)

    Math: 690

    Overall: 2180

Soo yeah, I didn't study for either, but my score (for some reason) improved 190 points the 2nd try. So I'm thinking maybe 3rd times the charm? Haha. Should I do it, or not bother? I don't really mind taking the test again...but I don't want to do it if I might get worse, or if the 2180 score is already good enough and it'll be a waste of my time. I'm not looking to go ivy league or anything because I couldn't afford it anyways.

PS: if anyone has taken an SAT prep course, did it help? I think maybe if I actually prepare for it I'll do better.
