  • Nash Equilibrium Question?

Hi, I was studying for my economics exam and this example in the notes stumped me:

The players: Air Canada and WestJet

The choice: cut fares by 50% or leave fares alone

    If both airlines cut fares,

    each airline’s profit = $400 million

    If neither airline cuts fares,

    each airline’s profit = $600 million

If only one airline cuts its fares,

    its profit = $800 million

    the other airline’s profits = $200 million

The professor wrote that they should both cut fares and make $400 million each. What I don't understand is why they don't leave the prices alone and make $600 million each. Can someone please explain

    Thanks!

  • What (short) young adult novel is this?

It's about a boy whose family is taken in the night by the Russian police near the end of Stalin's rule. His teacher helps him escape and he eventually gets tangled with a band of orphan children. Near the end of the novel, he finds a relative (uncle I think) who helps them escape to Poland (I think). One of the main characters stays behind because he killed his former orphanage director (after killing one of the orphans, Mishka) and decides to help others escape Russia as well.

    Thank you!

  • STATISTICS HELP PLEASE?

When a truckload of apples arrives at a packing plant, a random sample of 125 is selected and examined for bruises. The whole truckload will be rejected if more than 7% is damaged. Suppose 10% is damaged, what is the probability that the shipment will be accepted anyway?

  • What assumptions (in terms of energy and speed) do we have in alpha decay?

Hi, this question is for my physics lab tutorial.

We mathematically determined the minimum distance of an alpha particle and uranium-234 during the alpha decay of plutonium 238. Assuming conservation of energy and momentum, we were also able to calculate the ''final'' speed of the alpha particle.

However a question asks that the numerical value of the final speed of the alpha particle cannot be correct because we neglected some factor and it would affect the final speed of the alpha particle.

My guess is that the electrons of a daughter nucleus have some effect on the alpha particles as like charges attract and/or conservation of energy doesn't hold because it isn't a closed system thus velocity is not constant.

The question is pretty much theory. So, I guess my main question is what factors affect the final speed of an alpha particle during alpha decay?

  • Physics Canon Ball Help?

    The question is:

A canon ball is fired at a target x distance away. The target is y distance above the ground.

What angles should the canon be fired to hit the target?

I'm not sure how I would even start the question.

    lets say..

    x=200

    y=50

    And Vi=75m/s

Does the trajectory follow a parabolic shape still even though the target already has y distance above the ground?

  • Chemistry Stoichiometry help?

    Cu(OH)2CUCO3= 2 CuO + CO2 + H20

Calculate the predicted mass of the CuO.

Mass of the malachite (Cu(OH)2CUCO3) is 2.00 grams.

The mass of the CuO that I calculated was 1.44 grams but I`m not sure if I got the right answer.

    Thank you.

  • Some Chemistry Questions.?

    1) If a compound has more electrons, does it mean it will have a higher melting point?

    2) If a compound has a higher melting point, does it mean it will be more soluble in water? (e.g. CH4 vs OF2)

    3) How do you calculate the electronegativity of a compound? For example, I know HN would be 2.6-2.2= .4. But what about H2O or HCN.

    Thanks in advance!

  • Would it be Reasonable to Try and Loose 30-40 lbs in 9 Months?

    Hey, there!

So, I'm an 18 year old guy and I need to loose 30-40 lbs by graduation. I've already lost 15 pounds in fat but that was over a couple of months.

Do you guys have any suggestions?

My current routine is lifting weights/stretching for 30 minutes a day and moderate jogging for 20-30 minutes a day.

That really is all I can fit with my busy schedule. But is there someway I can improve my routine?

    Thanks!

  • Does jogging affect height in any way?

I was just wondering because I use to jog for 20 minutes a day. I then stopped because I had no time because of school. I measure myself everyday and I was 1/4-1/2 taller when I jogged for 20 minutes a day compared to now and I remember feeling taller. (I measure myself WITHOUT shoes)

My posture is still the same and I do stretches everyday still. I drink 2-3 cups of milk a day and recently started taking multi vitamins and I get 7-10 hours of sleep a day.

I'm a 17 1/2 year old male. If jogging doesn't affect your height, what are some possibilities of my decreased height?

    Thank you!

  • Do these sentences make sense/how can I improve them?

I'm trying to write an essay and I was wondering if the following made sense:

History will show us that humans are prideful beings. Early humans built grand monuments as a symbol of architectural superiority, technological prominence and to parade economic fortunes.

    How can I improve them?

    It's just a topic sentence (s)

    Thank you in advance.

  • What do you guys think of the series finale of Medium?

    I LOVED IT.

I must admit the ending got me.

Well, I guess I'm a sucker for romance (the '41 years later' bit was just so awesome). It was really sad, but the time-less love theme to it was epic.

I hope Medium get's nominated for an Emmy or Golden Globe next year.

Of all the series finales I've ever watched, Medium was probably top 3.

    What do you guys think?

  • What is Wendys Shift Schedule/times?

For example, I applied for Evening shift. What times would that be? I'm asking because I'm not sure if I can work that because I may not have a ride until later so I might switch to late night (which is from what time?).

    Thanks!

  • Do You Think I'm Actually Obese?

    Please read before answering

My BMI is a bit over 32 (I'm 5'6 1/2 and around 200 pounds), I know I'm overweight, but I never really considered myself obese because I'm more physically fit than a lot of the thin people in my grade (I can do a 7.3 on Beep Test/Shuttle run---also over a year, I was able to do 7.3 from 3.2)

I have extra fat, but nothing that hangs off my body and you can see some of my ribs really clearly.

Also, I'm able to jog without stopping for 20-30 minutes.

I heard that BMI can be limited by muscular individuals (like body builders and athletes), is this true?

Because apparently my ideal weight would be 140 pounds (meaning I'd have to lose at least 60 pounds).

My family is thickly boned and having large (but short) frames. Might that have something to do with it?

    What do you guys think?

  • How Can I Improve My Exercise Routine?

    Hi!

I have a treadmill and I run for about 20 minutes EVERYDAY or about 1 and half kilometers.

After that, I also do various stretches for about 20 to 30 minutes.

I'm apparently 'obese' (or heavy for my height) so my goal is to lose twenty pounds or more.

I've put on quite a bit of muscle in my arms and chest, and I heard that putting on muscle speeds up your metabolism?

I'm not really looking to lose twenty pounds THAT quickly (although it would be nice). A gradual loss is okay.

    Any tips and suggestions?

PS: I cut back on the carbs and sugar (which is hard because of all the holiday chocolate)

  • What University Should I Go To?

I'm in grade 11 and I think it's about time I should decide where I should go.

I'm thinking of going into business. I'm not sure what kind yet though.

Well, one of my dreams was to have my own clothing label or incorporate food and business (like owning a restaurant).

I want to go to a top notch university and not a just a local one.

One of my choices was University of Toronto, McGill University and (hahaha) even Oxford.

Also, if I decide to take Social Sciences or Management, how many years would it take to complete them? Also, if I complete them, is their any further education after wards (like a doctor and a phd)?

  • Why Do I Shrink During The Day?

I'm a seventeen year old male and during the morning I'm 5'6 1/2 and then in the evening I'm 5'5 1/2 to 3/4. Why does this happen and what is my real height then?

    PS: I hope I haven't stopped growing >.<
