Truth is a beautiful and terrible thing, and should therefore be treated with great caution
Do we have different ideas on the definition of "abortion"?
Birth control pills and morning after pills do not dispose of a blastocyst (the union of a sperm and egg), and are therefore considered pregnancy prevention (that is, they do not allow the sperm and egg to meet, so NOTHING DIES). However, many Christians insist this is abortion, and I do not understand why this is considered sane thinking when it is scientifically unsound.
Defend yourselves!
And for a short poll, if you believe birth control is abortion, do you also deny evolution?

3 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoMatisyahu's "Light" album, and "One Day"...?
I am in love with the song one day from his light album, the melody, the lyrics, the laid back vibe of the song.
Is the rest of Light this way, or there another feel for the album as a whole?
Since I like this one, any other Matisyahu songs I may like?
2 AnswersOther - Music1 decade agoHarry potter and felix felicis in book 6?
Slughorn mentions that only one student before harry has ever gotten the vial of felix felicis for making the draught of living death.
Who was it? Snape? Lily?
If it was snape, was there ever a reference as to what he used it for? I think it would be fascinating to know what he would have used it for! Does anyone know?
PS- That line was from the movie, I'm not sure if it is the same in the book. It's been awhile since I've read it.

5 AnswersMovies1 decade agoAre you one that walks away from Omelas?
The ones that walk away from omelas is a story (2 pages or so). Here is a summary.
Omelas is a city. A paradise, really. Insert anything you think of when you think of paradise. Happiness, celebration, games, love, fuelless power, washing machines, even an orgy if you want.
Religion, yes.
Clergy, no.
The one hardfast condition of this city is the existence of a small cellar beneath one of its buildings. No windows. A mop and bucket are in the corner. A small child, looking 6 but actually about 10 is locked in the cellar. It is malnourished and neglected. It is afraid of the mop. It was taken from its mother. It still remembers the light of day.
It is not loved. Yet each person in the city knows of it. Most go to see it when they are young, but others see it many times, and some none at all.
They know that they, like the child, are not free. They know compassion. It is the existence of the child, and their knowledge of its existence, that makes possible their happiness.
After seeing the child some go home and cry, others are angry. Yet once in a while, an adolescent or sometimes an adult does not go home at all. They silently walk away. They must go alone, past the city gates. They walk away in the darkness, and they do not come back.
The place they go towards is a place even less imaginable to most of us than the city of happiness. I cannot describe it at all. It is possible that it does not exist. But they seem to know where they are going, the ones who walk away from Omelas.
Would you walk away?
6 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoWhat happens to the souls of the three day old embryos that were sacrificed for stem cell research and therapy?
Do they get conceived, hang out a few days in momma's womb as a little ball of undifferentiated cells, and then are taken to use for the betterment of the human race,
and then they get to heaven and god says something like" damn, that sucks a big one that you never got to experience life, and even though your earthly existence helped other suffering people, because I don't do the whole reincarnation thing, you're pretty much SOL, so kick back and enjoy the harp music for all eternity, little blastocyst, because that's how long you're gonna be here"
And then do the stem cell researchers go to hell because they are using the embryos to help others (doesn't that make them a martyr in a way?) even though all proposed embryos to be used come from fertility clinics that would otherwise throw the unneeded embryos away (because the parents already had all the children they could handle)?
7 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoWhy was jesus dying for all sins the basis of christianity when jesus knew he was going to heaven?
My question is-
When Jesus died, he knew that he was the son of God and he knew that he was going home. He died because he was persecuted, not because he was sacrificing himself for any living individual at the time.
There are many who sacrifice themselves for others. Soldiers protecting citizens, police officers, bodyguards, and others that are personally defending others. I even had a dog that died protecting me from a rattlesnake.
These people are not the son of God. They do not know for certain if they are going to heaven. Faith in their beliefs is all they have. Jesus knew. These people didn't.
They are risking their eternal fate by saving someone else. Jesus sacrificed his body, not his soul.
Why is his bodily sacrifice so important to christians?

1 AnswerMedicine1 decade agoWhat makes your denomination so special?
Baptists.
Catholics.
LDS.
Presbyterians.
And all the other christian sects.
Why do you follow your specific denomination? If it is all based on the bible, why are there divisions within the religion?
And if you don't mind, can you give me a little blurb about what sets your denomination apart from the others. Hell, even if you aren't one, can you educate us a little if you know something we may not. For instance, I have no idea why baptists think they are special.
And does that mean the Adventists are going to hell?
9 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoChristians--When the rapture comes, who is going to take care of your pet?
You've committed your life to Jesus. You know you're saved. But when the Rapture comes what's to become of your loving pets who are left behind? Eternal Earth-Bound Pets takes that burden off your mind.
We are a group of dedicated animal lovers, and atheists. Each
Eternal Earth-Bound Pet representative is a confirmed atheist, and as such will still be here on Earth after you've received your reward. Our network of animal activists are committed to step in when you step up to Jesus.
We are currently active in 22 states. Our representatives have been screened to ensure that they are atheists, animal lovers, are moral / ethical with no criminal background, have the ability and desire to rescue your pet and the means to retrieve them and ensure their care for your pet's natural life.
We currently cover the following states:
Maine,New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan, Arkansas, Mississippi, Tennessee, Kentucky, Colorado, Oklahoma, Kansas, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, North Carolina (new) and Georgia (new).
Our service is plain and simple; our fee structure is reasonable.
For $110.00 we will guarantee that should the Rapture occur within ten (10) years of receipt of payment, one pet per residence will be saved. Each additional pet at your residence will be saved for an additional $15.00 fee. A small price to pay for your peace of mind and the health and safety of your four legged and feathered friends.
Unfortunately at this time we are not equipped to accommodate all species and must limit our services to dogs, cats, birds, rabbits, and small caged mammals.
Is anyone interested in this service?
16 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoSCI Modifications for a very small bathroom?
We have a long, small bathroom that is a sink, then toilet, then tub all in a row.
I am looking into swing away hinges so that the wheelchair (that is wider because of quad knobs) can fit into the room, but if that doesnt work...
any suggestions for how to get from the door of the bathroom to the tub? the only thing i can think of is to transfer from the chair onto a tub bench that we have hacksawed the side handles off of. THEN slide down the bench to the other side, THEN transfer from the bench to the toilet, THEN toilet to the tub.
please help me.
